It's the lettuce, sweetie. I mean, look at it this way, if it was eat meat or die myself, I'd be severely tempted... if people are going to starve though, they start eating all sorts of crazy things, like moss, earth, insects, and then there are those that turn to cannibalism... but hey, assuming I was able to make a rational choice, it's the lettuce...

An 80 mile hike through the mountains? Are you crazy? I'll never make it... even if I ate the steak, I wouldn't make it. Walking speed is 4 mph, but it's mountainous terrain, so it could get a lot slower in places- maybe 1 mph, or .5 mph... anyhow, given the terrain, say I averaged 10-15 miles hiking a day, it's going to take between 5 and 8 days. There's no way I'd take that kind of journey without proper supplies... I did expeditions with on D of E for just 3 days, and the pack I had to carry was not small... in other words, the scenario you envisage is poo with the options you give. I take the lettuce, and take the damn train...

I'm vegan.I'd go with the lettuce.

Odds are I'd find some edible plants in most mountain valleys but even if I didn't 80 miles is about 2-3 days walk depending on the terrain and provided you have water and are not a stick thin supermodel you can go far longer than that with no food at all.

So, if you are a Starving Christian and a minister was slowing you down because of terminal illness, and keeping you from your family that was 80 miles away, would you kill him and eat him? Or is murder still murder?

This is kind of a ridiculous question that has little to no basis in reality.

What I would do has to do with the situation as it actually occurs. Not with made-up unrealistic hypothetical questions that would never come true.

Even in a more realistic hypothetical situation, like being lost/stranded and you get either coconuts or a rabbit, it still would completely be situational. I would weigh the importance of my survival, the chances of other types of food, and the need for meat. I would also ask whether I would kill my cat or dog or husband for its flesh. And since the answer is "never", then I don't know that I would be able to kill another animal instead. Lack of Familiarity doesn't make it ok.

I am carnivore & would definately choose the steak because a 80 mile journey for any of my loved ones would require some stamina & steak would definately preside over lettuce on that score.

many of my classmates have asked me this. to them, i say that i'd rather starve than eat a piece of meat of any kind. i'd graciously take the lettuce. i've been a vegetarian for three or so years now, and to eat steak would betray my abstinence.

the 80 miles on foot thing is just a bit too extreme. however, my loved one would most likely understand that if he/she were to bear with my traveling 80 miles on foot just to see them, they had better prepare my funeral beforehand.

It would be impossible to travel 80 miles on foot over the mountains either way. I'll give them a call and save up money for my own private jet.

I would definitely eat the lettuce. Eating meat is wrong. I am a vegetarian newbie. I feel better now than I have ever felt in my life. Other than a fluke case of loose stools the other day after eating week old guacamole, I have been doing great.

Gypsy if you think anyone can travel 80 miles on just steak, you need to travel 80 miles on a single steak and see if you make it.

i would eat the lettuce. i am a vegetarian and could never ever eat an animal. animals have feelings you know. "all creatures even the simplest, love life and seek protection from harm." if every one knew the suffering the animals go through you would eat the lettuce too.

I would use the steak to lure in, bears, birds, and so on, and the lettuce to lure in rabbits, squirrels, whatever and then I would eat them and the steak and lettuce. I would use their coats to keep me alive. Survival of the fittest.
