I am doing great on my vegetarian diet (recently switched from a meat eating diet). However, this morning when I got up I had to make a bee line for the can. I had some guacamole last night that had been in the refrigerator for a week, but it still smelled good. Is it okay to eat guacamole?

I've just opened a bottle of wine - you're welcome to the cork.

Yes, I believe the guacamole was still OK if refrigerated the entire time; however, by not eating meat and eating only veggies your system has not completely adjusted and will cause you to have loose bowels. If you remain a vegetarian your system should adjust and your bowels will become regular again. Remember that too much of anything can cause the runs, and you need to eat a balanced veggie and fruit diet. You can get a book that advises you on a balanced veggie diet, as just eating a lot of veggies won't do the trick. Check your local drug store for the book.

Have you ever had that reaction w/ guacamole before?
If not, you might have reached the point that I fondly call "the fine line".
I define this as the line to avoid crossing at all costs. Though I'm a veggie and I eat plenty of raw and healthy food, I do get to the point where I eat a little too much and I have to go to the restroom. (it's a similar experience to yours). The guac may have acted as that food that pushed you over the "line". Consider that you have been eating meat for many years up until this point and your body is still adjusting to the change...

BTW- if the guac was fresh (as opposed to store-bought) and it had been in the fridge for a week, you probably should have tossed it. That stuff goes bad quickly. If it tasted a little slimy...No Good!

Your body is just adjusting. It might take a couple of weeks. If you are concerned, perhaps see a dietician.
I'm sure you will be fine.
I had rather lose bowels (for almost two weeks!) when I converted to veganism (not many people know this *blush*).
It's because now you are eating more of the right stuff - your body is adjusting. So don't freak out - and congratulations on you new found vegetarianism.
A little flatulence never hurt anyone, but killing animals for meat - that does hurt them. They have no voice to tell people this, and that makes it our responsibility to tell people on their behalf.
Oh and I wouldnt eat guacamole if it had been in the fridge for a week... (Ok so I wouldnt eat it anyway because it contains cream, but what I mean is, I think a week is a bit too long for guacamole).

As mentioned previously, it does take a while for your body to adjust to your new meat-free diet, however I don't think that week-old guacamole is a particularly good idea! It may have been slightly off, or (depending on what you've been eating since you switched) it may have been a bit too rich.

Keep up the good work Foxy!!

I wouldn't eat guacamole that's been sitting for more than 3 days.
Normally it's okay. Just make sure pre-made stuff doesn't contain anything funky. I don't eat dairy and once in a while I discover someone that likes to put sour cream in theirs.
Your problem could also be caused by your digestive system adjusting or you could be getting too much of one thing while changing your eating habits.

It's ok to eat guacamole but not to keep it in the fridge for a week! As a general rule all chilled food that's not packed by a supermarket (including open packs) shouldn't be kept for more than 3 days (though hard cheese is ok) - food you buy is often stored in gas that stop it from going off as quickly so that it can be stored for longer. Congrats on becoming a vege! xx

guacamole is fine to eat-but not after a week! It only stays good for about 3 days after opening. It likely caused your problem, but you could also be detoxing from meat. Eat some rice and a banana-should clear you right up

That's normal as your body is adjusting.. if it keeps up for a month then U just need to have products like rice which bind that will help. Most don't know this that Vegetarians should eat more fruit than veggies!

1. Check the sell-by date.
2. If you have guacamole and it happens again, avoid guacamole.
OR continue to eat it , but accept you're going to experience "consequences".

I can't eat beanfeast - it gives me a migraine and really bad indigestion and so I avoid it (even though tastewise it's not bad). Peppers also upset my stomach a bit (although I don't get a migraine) but I love them, so I put up with that, and make sure to cook them well and not eat vast quantities of them.

He who eats brown rice will sit long and think hard, three or four times a day. (Peter Sellars in the Millionairess). It takes time to adjust to a vegetarian diet, which has more roughage in it.

Guacamole should be made fresh, and if hasn't got a considerable amount of chili in it can go 'off'.
