You can not eat milk products or meat products anything that comes from a living animal, correct? I question this because I have a friend that claims to be vegetarian vegan, so I would like to find out some things. Can you eat junk food, cakes, pies, cookies, candy, things that are bought from the store?

If a vegetarian is overweight, then they haven't really learned how to be a vegetarian. It's just like anyone that hasn't learned good eating habits, vegetarian, or otherwise-they're going to be overweight, under-nourished, and unhealthy. I'll answer for what you specifically asked about to the best of my ability.

junk food-mcdonalds french fries have a natural flavor from a beef source, so no. No hamburgers, hotdogs, or various shaped chicken products, or anything with cheese if they're vegan, so no nachos or grilled cheese or mozarella sticks, or milk shakes or regular dairy icecream or custard.

cakes-you have to be careful because some really cheap cake mixes actually have lard in them, same with really cheap tubs of frosting. Actually a lot of the bakery frostings have lard in them too. And there is some kind of ingredient in cake that comes from seaweed I think that some vegans won't eat because they consider it a real, living thing.

pie-yes, but not if the crust has been brushed with egg whites, so unless you made it yourself you really don't know. And no jello pies, for obvious reasons.

candy-no skittles, starbursts (they have gelatin in them), and vegans won't eat milk chocolate

you can eat things bought in a store, you just have to read the ingredients, and sometimes "know" what they mean when they list certain ones.

Sadly, yes. While there is a pervasive myth that vegetarians and vegans are all skin and bones from lack of proper nutrition - there are a great many HUGE veggies out there.

Some people just like to eat. When you over eat, even the healthiest foods will make you fat.

And then there are "convenience veggies."

Not all veggies are about being healthy. Some are very lazy and care nothing for their nutrition. They eat entirely out of the vending machines. Chips, soda, candy. You'd be suprised at how many of those items are vegan. PETA's got a list.

I had a friend like this. She was sick all the time.

Vegan desserts are taking the world by storm. I introduced my niece and her big meat eating boyfriend to vegan chocolate cake this weekend.

They're better for your heart. No cholesterol from the milk and eggs. But people don't seem to realize they're still fattening. Flour, sugar, oil, vegan butter.

Alternative Baking Co makes some of the BEST cookies in the WORLD!

darn. i drooled on my keyboard.

It is possible to be vegan and still not have an entirely healthy diet.

Just because an item contains no animal product does not mean it is healthy.

I have a wide repertoire of vegan dessert recipes. Just because they're vegan doesn't mean I can load up on them with no health consequences. They're still full of white sugar, white flour and oil. That's not good for anyone on a regular basis.

There are a large number of vegans and vegetarians who choose this lifestyle for political reasons and not health reasons. If this is the case and they don't care about nutrition, they can easily fall into habits (or retain habits) of eating too much junk food.

One is not slender or healthy just by virture of being vegetarian or vegan.

Anyone can be seriously overweight! This vegan could have a medical problem, or just eat unhealthily. There are MANY vegan junk foods, as well as microwave dinners, mixes, whatever, so if you eat only vegan goodies, then you will get fat, I guess, especially if you don't excercise. It is correct that we do not eat or use any animal products.

I'm not overweight but you can buy cakes, cookies and candy that are vegetarian. Most chocolate bars are Vegetarian, so you can put on a lot of weight.

Vegan, I would say it would be very hard to put on a lot of weight as nearly everything you eat is a complete source of nutrition for you.

if you are a vegetarian there is still a lot of junkfood that you can eat.
however, if you are a vegan, you cannot eat any animal byproducts, so most junk food is ruled out

i have never met a vegan or vegetarian that was overweight though

In stead of burgers I eat nut cutlets (you can buy vegan burgers but I'd rather eat something fresh). I also make my own vegan cookies, cakes, muffins etc. It is possible to still be chunky when vegan.
What makes a difference being vegan is that vegans consume no cholesterol.

vegans can['t eat the things you named
and i would stay away from those, i don't eat those things even if i'm not vegan, cake? is like eating sugar, cookie? is like eating sugar, pies? its like eating sugar, candy? is like eating sugar, if i want to eat sugar, i would just eat sugar and cut out the middle man (the candy factory or whatever) and just eat sugar, stir some sugar in water and make water cool aid with no cool aid, so to answer your questin, no i don't beleive any vegan can be over weight, unless he was over weight before he turned vegan, in which case give him a year or two and he'll be at nomal weight.

If they eat potato chips and potatoes and a lot of starches and drink a lot of diet drinks yes than can be over weight. Starches turn into sugar so they can be digested. And diet drinks can make you gain weight becasue you body doesn't know that is not getting any calories so it can store them as fat.
