You may have an infection if the mucus is green, brown, or yellow. If it is white or clear then try tylenol cold medicine, drink plenty of fluids, and get some rest. Other things you can use is a vaporizer or a humidifier at night to help clear the nasal passages. If that doesn't help it within the next few days then see a doctor. Get well soon.

It it painful in your chest at all? When you cough up mucus is it a dark color? Yellow or worse? These are signs of infection. First I would force tons of fluids, that's going to at least thin out the mucus. Second, I would take a decongestant medicine. You can get this OTC (over the couter) at any drug store/grocery store. That will just help dry you out and stop producing so much mucus. If you don't get better in a few days you may need an antibiotic.

If what you are spitting up is grenish or yellow it is probably an infection and you need an antibiotic. if not, it could be an allergy. Tea isn't a medicine, rest, aspirin and sleep is the best cure for a cold. Lots of Vitamin C (OJ or actual Vitamin C tabs.) You could try sudafed.. For the sore throat, gargle with warm water and a teaspoon of salt.

For the sore throat gargle with pickle juice and water, it works wonders. Then all you can do for the rest is take aspirin. If the mucus gets really bad then get into a hot shower and it'll loosen it up, go to a sauna if you have access to one.

You do not need to see a doc for the common cold. Let it run it's course. Except to take things to make you FEEL more comfortable there is nothing you can do to get rid of a cold. Colds just need to run their course and usually last about a week.
