I've been as a patient with a lot of surgeries most of my life, although not a hole in the heart. but even when i was a little girl i was friends with some of those patients. the medical technical information has come a long way since i was very young and i know several people that has lived through much worse. she'll have a much better chance at a good life if they repair it. no guaranties with anything in this life. just hope.
one little girl i met had not only a hole in her heart but it was reversed and a wall missing on the heart, she lived and seemed very happy, pretty quick after the surgery- that was 25years ago.
I'll say a prayer for her and u'r family for the right decision.

OK,..I am a Nurse,... my advise is to follow your Doctor's instructions. Do you want your sister to get better? I would say so. I firmly believe that surgery in this day and age is far superior than it ever was ( especially in USA ) The difficulty is to trust ~ I understand how hard the decision is,... (My Father had heart surgery ) but, the ramifications of just doing nothing is far worse. Your family need to re visit the specialist and ask any other pertinent questions ~ I am sure that you will be more at ease after you get the answers.

She needs the operation. You can die stepping off a curb but we all do it. All operations carry the risk of death but a hole in your heart needs to be fixed. Otherwise she won't have a normal life.

Depends on where the hole is, the size and who the surgeon is? The open heart surgeries for patients of all ages is much more common these days...

You need to bring these concerns to her doctor. Be honest about your fears about it. They would be the ones who know how serious this is and how it may affect her life in the future. I understand your feelings. My sister was not able to have a lifesaving surgery for various reasons and we lost her....so the decision could have consequences either way. Best Wishes to you and your sister!! :)

without the surgical repair of the hole, you sister will become very weak, sick, and die a painful death. with the surgery, she has the chance to lead a normal, healthy life.
