Yes, my father-in-law had similar problem. Nothing to eat or drink is fine = he's getting all the good stuff in the tube.

Yes any liquid will go straight to his lungs. There is liquid in most foods, that is why they tell you none.

Sorry that your family has to go through this. It is a part of life, just a difficult part.

I don't think the food will go right to his lungs, but the risk for aspiration is probably very high, and the doctors are trying to stay on the safe side. As far as the feeding tube, if your father is currently receiving formula through the tube, he shouldn't need anything to eat or drink because he will receive adequate nutrition/hydration from the tube feeding itself, as long as it is running at a rate that is sufficient to meet his needs as determined by a dietitian.

it is near impossible to give advice without seeing a patient first.. but he may not be able to swallow properly and that will or may cause aspiration (vomit into the lungs which cause aspiration pneumonia.

He is 89 and end stage kidney disease? I am having a difficult time accepting a feeding tube. Is he going to get better or is this prolonging death??

This must be a difficult time for you.. God bless.

Yes. It's not uncommon for elderly people to have trouble with food going the wrong way and getting inhaled which can cause pneumonia which obviously is very dangerous at his age. It may sound inhuman but they are trying to keep him alive with this treatment.
