I recently had udon noodles for the first time ever. (Don't ask me how I ever missed it.)

It was in a Japanese restaurant in an American city. It did not look overly Americanized, as it came in a decently sized bowl with a spoon. Are you supposed to eat the noodles with your chopsticks? Do you spoon them out? Put them in the spoon with your chopsticks? Does it matter?

I ate it with my chopsticks because I was too hungry to wait for the soup to cool down, then drank the soup later.

Mm... Udon, I'm so jealous!

It Japan you would see people eating everything out their chopsticks first. Yep, big long noodles hanging out of your mouth as you shovel it in. It goes against everything Miss Manners would ever tell you, lol. Hold the bowl with one hand to keep it from dripping in your lap. Then, just drink all the broth down. Yum.

In America though, eat it however you feel comfotable. Spoon, no spoon, chopsticks, whatever. Slurping will never offend a Japanese chef, but it might get you a look from a Western dining companion. (In which case you can enlighten them, lol.)

When in Japan, the custom is to eat the noodles & condiments with the chopstick NOISILY. Yep, u need to *SLURP* when u eat so that the noodles enter u mouth quickly enough to cool it down (it's supposed to be some sort of technique). And also, it is a sign to the chef that the noodles are delicious. Japanese don't use spoons (except now that we live in a modern age, they do), but typically, when u have finished the noodles, the soup would've cooled off by then, and then u just put wrap ur hands around the bowl and drink the soup just like that.

Use the chopsticks for the noodles and the spoon for the soup.

you use the chopsticks to eat the noodles, and you can either use the spoon to aid the guiding of the noodles out of the soup or utilize the spoon to consume the liquid itself.
