YAY! It's been AT LEAST 15 minutes since the last "innovative and esoteric" person asked this question! We almost thought it would never appear again. But, we knew we always had the other 1000 times it's been asked to go back and look upon.
Rather than waste your time bugging and harassing people who hurt no one, why not go fight for something worthwhile? There's a genocide in Darfur. Iraq veterans are coming back to no income, no healthcare, and no jobs. AIDS affects something like 60% of the population in Africa. Homeless children are starving to death RIGHT HERE in the US.
Just seems like your priorities are off.
The answer (so that I don't get violated by losers) is that plants
A. Are not sentient
B. Have no central nervous system
C. Do not scream when tortued and killed
But, if you think that all life is equal, why do you not eat humans? Why do you not eat your dog? Why do you not eat slugs?

Now wait a second... I'm not a vegan and I'm not here to knock vegans...
Anyway, isn't there scientific study that plants do, in fact, register a frequency, or sub-sound, when you damage them or even hold flame near them? I seem to remember this from grade school. Don't they chemically react when attacked by pests, too? Some plants physically react when touched or even close their petals to trap prey. They do not have central nervous systems, per se, but neither do insects and some fish. Sorry, maybe this isn't a stellar answer, but I think eating a salad could be considered plant cruelty, sure.

I don't think so and, as far as I know, most societies in the world do not consider it unethical to do so...but there is a group in India that believes that eating plants is wrong and, because they must do so in order to survive, they pray and ask forgiveness (or something similar) after every meal. I think this is one that you have to decide for yourself based on your own ethical foundation. What do believe is right and wrong...perhaps you need a more general philosophical basis to start from and then you can see how eating plants fits within your belief system (not necessarily religion).

No because plants don't have a central nervous system and therefore cannot feel pain. Also a lot of them (mainly fruit) evolved to taste good so that their seeds and pits would be dispersed by the animal eating it.

Yes but as vegan&proud pointed out, by eating meat you actually kill way more plants than if were to eat plants alone (not to mention the animal of course).

Some of us don't eat meat or dairy because it's healthy. I still wouldn't want to be cruel to any animal. Plants don't yell that loud anyway.
