The primary function of a defibrillator is to help the heart get back into normal rhythm when one is either experiencing ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation, the unit will sense that there is a problem and go right into stand by mode , it will keep monitoring the heart for ten seconds and administer therapeutic shocks, If the first shock does not correct the problem it will administer another shock and analise, this will continue till the problem is terminated.
Had one implanted four years ago because i went into v-tac and the paramedics had to hit me with their external defibrillator. It was then my cardiologist decided I needed an implant.

If the heart tissue is diseased to a point, even the defribulator won't work.

No, when cellular death of the heart (and the patient) occurs, no further "outside" electrical stimuli is going to change that. Also, a defibrillator does not deliver "a constant stimuli or "beat", it is designed to deliver a set charge to "stun" the heart back into a "normal" rythym. A Pacemaker is designed to deliver the continued "beat", but even so, as above, if a heart is not viable and live, no resuscitation electrical or otherwise is possible.

The previous poster is correct. Also if a patient is dying and decides to have their defibrillator shut of they can do that as well. That way if their heart goes into an abnormal rhythm it doesnt shock them and they can die peacefully.

yes and no, the batteries dont last forever. But yes it will hit every few seconds until either the patients heart is in a normal rythym, the doctor shuts it off, or the battery dies!!!
