weeks days months even years or even the possibility of never showing symptoms.
if you are worried about stds then go to your doctor or local clinic and get tested.
It varies based on a persons immune system and type of std. HIV hepatitus are two that you wont know you have until you get tested. Often they dont exhibit any symptoms.

I'll address the "right away" fear of your question. For males, Gonnorea and Chylamidia will show symptoms within about 10-14 days after your sexual encounter. If you're a female, I can't address the timeline for you - sorry.
The other VDs (VD = STD) will show symptoms beyond 10-14 days and perhaps not at all until it's too late to treat (like late stage syphillis).
And in these days of AIDS, HIV is TOO EASY to contract, so please ensure you "wrap that rascal" because that one time you fail to wrap it could be a life-or-death decision. Fail to wear a condom and "...you're gonna die".
Tip: To minimize your odds of contracting a regular VD, always take a shower (with your mate) using soap, also brush your teeth and tongue with toothpaste, before having sex (oral, anal or regular) and after you ejaculate (enjoy the moment but do shower with soap and brush your teeth again SOON afterward).
You BOTH should shower before and after sex - has worked for me since after high school in 1984.
Brushing your teeth before and after (oral) sex is just good hygiene (clean "box" and clean mouth/tongue = great pleasure).
Regardless, wear a condom every time you have sex with a partner (masturbation doesn't count unless the friction hurts you!).
It's up to you and your partner when you should refrain from using condoms - but you both should agree to this action because you don't who he/she's been with within the last 10 years (the incubation period for HIV/AIDS). A good lab test will give you some assurance of any present or non-present VDs.
I hope this helps you.
P.S. I had to add this bit. Once one is over 75, I wouldn't worry about contracting a VD.

it may take days, weeks or even years or not at all sexually transmitted diseases (stds) infects the urethra in the male and the vagina in the females where it can not be seen so if you had sex and think you have a std go to your local hospital or if you want to keep it confinditial go to your local health clinic because to them you are john doe and jane doe if you do not get checked for stds you could live alot shorter than your peers
