How about a good barbecue? Hot dogs and hamburgers, potato salad, beans and watermelon. You can buy everything at your local grocery store or Costco including the premade potato salad and canned beans. For 40 people, food will probably cost around 80.00-120.00. Costco or Sam's will be your best bet for getting large quanities of food for less.

Pizza!! Chips, Dips, Soda, & Juice boxes (for your son) Simple and perfect for both a 2 year old and a 19 year old :)
If your doing ballons I would just go for the basic ones; but lots of color. leave the ribbon long so they drag the ground.. lots of streamers and maybe do cupcakes instead of seperate cakes. (you can do more that way.. different flavors, color icing.. ect.)

I would avoid a "theme" since it's a split party. But if theme is a must for you then rainbow would be good for both.
For the goodie bags you can get a tube with mini play dough cheap at Wal-mart drop in some candy and your set. (After all your never too old for play dough LOL)

Hope this was helpful.

wow, that's a great undertaking. The 19 year old doesn't want to be with two year olds, and the two year olds don't care about 19 year olds. I'm truly southern, so to feed a crowd, a barbeque is call to order on limited budget. Of course the BBQ could be chicken, burgers, ribs, pork tenderloin,etc.. Of course punch, soda, cake, potato salad, green salad, .I would say about $200.00 would be correct for that many people. Just make sure to have a separate play area for your little ones.

You should kfind a cheap good chicken place and buy a big tray of chicken. Everyone likes chicken. I would try Albertsons, they have good chicken and sides. They even have a deal for like 250 pieces for only about $100.00. Thats bertter then you could do anyplace else for that many people. Thats what we do at my place.

I would go Italian. It is really easy and cheap to have trays of ziti and meatballs and rolls and salad. My boyfriend and his goddaughter who is 20 years younger than him have celebrated their birthdays together for years. They each have half of the cake dedicated to each of them.

Don't combine the two. The little one will be overwhelmed by the adults and the adults will not enjoy cupcakes and punch...

Your son should have his own party; don't combine it with your friends.
