My sister and a brother are both diabetic and they would love to have your numbers. 54 is a tad on the low side, was that reading taken first thing in the morning? The 159 is acceptable a couple of hours after eating. If it was 159 an hour after eating, that is a bit low. Sounds like you may be pre-diabetic. You may want to have your physician give you the glucose tolerance test.

It doesn't matter what your age, weight and height are. Glucose levels fasting should be 60-99. Two hours after meals it should be under 140. However, these are lab values. A home glucose monitor is not a good diagnosing tool. In some cases, when glucose levels are consistently high on a home meter that its probably right. But then there are cases like yours where the glucose levels on your meter are too close to normal ranges. A home testing meter can be off as much as 20%, higher or lower. That means that all of your test can be in the normal range...not. The best thing to do is see your doctor. With your family history I would ask to have a glucose tolerance test along with the fasting test. In the early stages of diabetes it's possible that your glucose could be correcting itself over night and be normal. But after meals it could stay elevated longer than it should. In a glucose tolerance test they would take your glucose fasting and then give you a sugary drink. Then your glucose would be tested at one and two hours after. If at 2 hours your glucose is 200 or higher it would suggest diabetes. Most doctors will want to repeat the test on a different day to confirm the diagnosis (and is standard). If it's between 125 and 199 at 2 hours then you would be considered prediabetic. This is a clear warning that you are headed for diabetes and making some lifestyle changes might prevent the progression to diabetes. If your glucose spikes after and an hour and then drops low then you have reactive hypoglycemia. Many type 2's have this before they progress to diabetes. it's another warning that suggests making lifestyle changes to prevernt the progression to diabetes. Take care and do see a doctor soon.

The most accurate way is to do fasting sugar tests. The current guidelines in diagnosing diabetes is 2 fasting blood sugars >120-125, depending on your source, on 2 separate days. Your blood sugar will obviously be higher right after you eat, but rarely over 200. Try taking a blood sugar right when you get up in the morning before you eat anything.
Hope this helps.
Added later- the person above wrote NL range 70-110, that is the NL "fasting" range.

If you have had your blood sugar at 159 at any of the times you mentioned you should go see your doctor about it. A person who is not diabetic should be between 80 and 120 during those times. Your readings are not all that high and maybe you can control your blood sugar through diet and exercise. Diabetes is not something to be taken lightly.

You're probably pre-diabetic. Normal range is 60-105. You'll want to get blood tests done by your doc. Fasting test and a Hemoglobin A1c (average BS over 3 month span). You'll want to start an exercise regime, which could simply be finding time to walk in your neighborhood or through the mall. Try to cut out sugars and fats from your meals as much as you can.

Normal blood sugar should range 70-110. If you have your results written down with the time of day that you took these readings then see your doctor to get his input on this. Your readings range from low to slightly elevated so I would think you doc will most likely order diabetes testing for you.

Normal is anywhere from 75 to 120. 54 is definately too low and 159 is too high. Excerise more and watch what you eat. Cut down on breads, pasta and anything startchy.

normal is 80-120 mg/dcl anything below 80 is considered hypoglycemic but go on how you feel. I dont worry about high numbers until 180-200 mg/dcl but again go on how you feel. always ask your doctor for sound advise.
