yup, be patient and stick to the meds. the first month is awful, the side effects are upsetting but i promise it gets better. make sure you inform the school, in case she has an episode at school, they will need to know whats going on.
other than that if an episode starts try to talk to her until she gets calmed down then just let her go get some rest, we dont realize how much that takes out of them. dont worry all will be fine. early diagnosis increases their prognosis for a healthy life.

I am sorry this is happening to you. From what I have heard, both conditions are treatable, even though there is no cure for them yet, and can be managed with medications. Maybe it is better to get second opinion before putting child on medications. Bipolar is extremely hard to diagnose in adults, and that makes it even harder to diagnose it in children. Schizophrenia happens very rarely in those under 15. Probably it would be better to get a second opinion. Also there are many cases when these medications make people suicidal, especially children. Please be very, very careful. And be strong!
I think this is a good website.

It is very uncommon for a child to be labeled bipolar or schizophrenic at such a young age. I would get a second opinion. If she really is, you will need to be very vigilant about making sure that she takes her meds, and very observant of her moods and actions. Any changes should be reported to the psychiatrists asap. She may need increase in her meds as she grows, or she may need her meds changed. It could take some time before they find just the right medications for her. Everyone reacts differently to medication.
My prayers are with both of you. This is a very heavy burden to carry.

Fish oil supplements: adults can take 4 daily; so 2 seems reasonable for an 8 yr old. Phone: (800)826-3632 re bipolar disorder. See: www.nami.org/ & www.mayoclinic.com/health/ & www.nimh.nih.gov and look up both conditions separately.

i have worked in mental health for over 30 years. i would get a second opinion. some times people with schizophrenia can get quite manic and agitated, which can have similar symptoms of a bi polar illnes. schizophrenia and bi polar illness is quite often genetic. check to see if other family members have a history of either disease. it is very uncommon to have both illnesses., especially at such a young age. both are treatable. hope this helps, good luck to you and your daughter

That is totally unfair to the child I would move to a new town because this diagnosis is so severe. I thought adult diagnoses were only used after the age of eighteen by doctors.

If you're a poor single mother chances are you are more easily manipulated by social system.
Counseling first. Drugs will never be easily controlled by a child.

get a second opinion! Before you label her and pump her full of very serious medication, talk to other doctors to see what they think. And follow your instincts. You know her best.
