There will not be a formal inspection process, as you have already been admitted into the Schengen Zone. However, security/police officers are entitled to request documentation from whomever they wish.

Nothing to do with new EU laws, when most EU countries signed the Schengen Agreement it was to effect a Europe without borders, where freedom of movement was granted between all EU states, however, the UK did not sign, thats why passports are still needed to get in and out, even when we are all EU citizens. I have passed over the border, it depends which place you cross at, there are many unmanned crossings, where you only know you have passed into Spain when you see the red and yellow flag flying and signs in Spanish, Perpignan, I did show my passport as that is a post that was guarded by the Guardia Civil, I held it up and was waved through.
Once in Spain, it is a legal requirement to carry photgraphic ID at all times, passport being the most obvious as it can be requested by any police authority, and they do like their road blocks to check papers here, they are permitted under Spanish law, to hold you up to 48 hours to ascertain your identity, be warned....you also cannot use a credit or debit card without showing it either

When you go into France from the ferry you may be asked for your passport at the control but it depends on if you arrive during the lunch break or elevenses. I am really serious. Even when they are in the control booth they continue to smoke their Galois cigarettes and wave you through. The same applies at the French - Spanish border with the Spaniards likely to act heavy but the French will wave you through. As an aside, if you go into Switzerland by car every vehicle is stopped and checked over and the passport is scrutinised.
Have a good time and have a happy Easter.

No you will not. Spain and France are both part of the Schengen agreement of EU (and others) countries that do not require passport check between thier borders.

The full list of Schengen countries is:
Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.

Norway and Iceland, which are not members of the EU, are part of the Schengen agreement.

There is also a bi-lateral agreement between UK and Ireland where you do not need a passport to travel between these two countries - but only these two - you need a passport to travel from or to anywhere else.

Yes you are going to be asked to show your passport because border patrols can not know if you and/or the other occupants of the vehicle are EU citizens.

No... you will first see a sign reading bye bye France and a few meters later you will see a sign saying hello Spain. Single market mate... the only thing that changes are the language and the taxes...... plus you can't get decent tapas in France
