Cake in a packet or a box is really some entrepreneurs way of making a quick buck out of lazy or unintelligent people that find making a cake the traditional way is'nt a piece of cake.
making cake the traditional way is also a lot healthier because it wont contain heaps of chemical preservatives, that are included to prevent it from getting spoilt while waiting for the box to get sold.

I do it all the time. I started with a very basic recipe and now make carrot cakes and brownies and all sorts from scratch. In fact, for my daughter 13th party last weekend, I made her a chocolate and nut cake with pink strawberry icing in a playboy bunny shape and all from scratch with no templates! I have to say it looked great and tasted amazing.
After baking things from scratch for a while, you realise just how bad those packet and box mixes are. They cost so much more money and you get a lot less cake. And they are normally full or loads of rubbish. At least making a cake from scratch, you know exactly what goes into it and it so much more satisfying to eat. And when people enjoy it you feel amazingly proud of yourself.

All the time, I think that it's better to make a cake from scratch rather than using those packet mixes because you know exactly what has gone into it. Also I think it's more satisfying seeing the end product of something you know you have done by yourself

I have! It is pretty easy but the idea of cake mix is too give people more time for other things. Cakes from scratch are easy but take more time than add 3 eggs, oil and bake at 350 for 45 minutes.

I have several times. I have a few recipes for home made cakes that are actually better than the box mixes, but as a rule, home made cakes are very dry (at least compared with mixes). Plus, if you're making it for your kid's Christmas party at school or something, the kids really don't care--all they know is they're getting cupcakes (or cake)!

I actually never have used a box cake... but in an emergency I have once bought a frozen cake that only needed to be baked. What a disapointment!

Easy! Just remember to check the time - fan-forced ovens will need less. When you think it is ready, stick a skewer in it to see if it is ready - if it comes out with sticky stuff on it, it's not ready and will need a little longer. And always flour and butter on the pan or use baking paper or it will get stuck! Good luck!

I rarely use a packet mix - making cakes from scratch is fun, and they taste better!

If you haven't done it before, then just look up a children's cookbook from the library as they have really easy to follow instructions.

Have fun!
