Has anyone tried work out the centres of UK, England and Scotland. I have tried various methods all of which have produced some spectacular results. For UK centre I drew a line from John o' Groats to Lands End and from Cape Wrath to Dungeness. By this method the centre of the UK is, would you believe, Aviemore north Scotland . Using similar method centre of Scotland is Stirling, no surprise there. Now comes the big surprise, the centre of Engand , I drew a line from the Scottish border north of Carlisle to Dungeness and from Berwick to Lands End, the line crossed at Penrith, just south of Carlisle. I did not use islands, and if start and end locations are altered slightly it doesn't make much difference. So there we have it, Penrith is the centre of England, we have been conned for centuries that B'ham is the Midlands area but to my, unscientific,is there such a word, calculations someone has got it very wrong. Come on egg heads prove me wrong

I believe the vcentre of Britian actually lies in Lancashire, it was worked out by proper cartographers and geographers and the like. Haltwhistle in Northumberland also claims to be the centre of Britain. Either way you were pretty close though.
Penrith is not just south of Carlisle, its about 20 mile away

Your right ! Now what do we say, were off to the midlands so see you in Penrith or see you in the South, that would be Birmingham then and what about London that would be off the scale then. Now thats not such a bad idea its one way to get rid of that war criminal Blair . Nice one.

It depends how you define 'centre' in a non-regular shape.
Some say the centre of an island is the point most distant from the sea, which is clearly not what you are doing.
