No, it needs to be washed. Wash it gently with an antibacterial soap, using your fingertips, no nails. Wash it until it no longer feels slimy, then rinse it well. Pat it dry with a clean towel (I use paper towels, one use.), let it be exposed to the air for a few minutes before you put whatever you are using on it. Remember, only use a thin layer of ointment, tattoo goo, or what your artist told you to do. Too much, and you will have a goopy mess. It should be moisturized, but not glossy. The idea is to keep it as close to normal skin as possible while it's healing.

Do not keep it covered. Your tat needs air to heal.
Fresh Tattoo
Take bandage off in 2 hours
Wash tattoo carefully with warm soapy water
DO NOT SCRUB
Lightly pat the tattoo until dry…
DO NOT RUB
Apply a very thin coat of bacitracin or aquaphor ointment 3 times a day for 3 to 5 days
Although re-bandaging a tattoo is not recommended, if covering the tattoo is necessary a sterile bandage or dressing should be used.
Be sure and wash the tattoo every night and morning…
DO NOT SOAK
Avoid tattoo exposure to direct sunlight and refrain from swimming in fresh, salt or chlorinated water for at least 2 weeks.
After External Healing
Tattoos heal quickly BUT fading can still be a problem
Apply hand lotion once a day until dryness stops
Vaseline Intensive Care, Lubriderm, Nivea, etc...
Tanning fades tattoos
Always cover fully healed tattoo with sun block
DO NOT RUIN YOUR INVESTMENT!!!

you need to wait a full 24 hours, then it will be ok to take a shower. It will be ok if you get soap or shampoo on it. After a few days of taking a shower you will notice that the skin on the tatoo will start to fall off and it will be black where the ink was. Dont freak out, its supposed to do that. Your tat will be fine, just dont pick at it or scratch it, and dont let anyone else touch it. Before you put ointment on it, make sure you wash your hands and if your tat is on a part of your body that is exposed to air, such as arm or leg, try not to get it dirty.
Didn't your artist give you directions on what to do? As i read through other anwers i notice that some people have said things that my tattoo artist says is "a big no-no" such as A&D oinment, i heard that it removes the ink from your skin. call your artist and ask him what you should do to take care of it.
if you have any more questions about it, just e-mail me.

No need to cover it while in the shower. Don't let the water hit it directly, as the pressure can knock off scabs prematurely. Don't take baths or soak the tattoo in water. Pat dry after your shower, don't rub it.

no...your artist didn't give you directions? Supposed to take the bandage off and then take a shower. Use your hand to clean the tattoo with unscented antibacterial soap...then after you get out of the shower...pat your tattoo dry..do not rub...then use the moisturizer that your artist told you to use.

The dye is imbedded in the skin, showering wont affect it. It will form a scab in a few days and its important not to scatch or pick at it.I have a torso of tattoos, my advice is to get tempory ones as you change your personality over time

Yes you can take a shower. You are supposed to wash it gently with a soft wash cloth at least twice a day and put A&D ointment on it afterwards for at least two days

No, you dont need to cover it, just be gentle and try not to scrub too hard or it will look so messed up. Make sure you're gentle when you dry it too and put ointment on it after drying.
