At 22 I weighed 98 lbs. & just could not seem to break 100 no matter what. I'm 5'2" tall w/a small frame & have always been big busted w/a matching rear, so that 98 lbs. was way too thin. I moved to CA & was allergic to EVERYTHING so they put me on all kinds of meds. In 8 mo's I gained 60 lbs even though i was exercising more & eating healthier than ever before. I moved back to TX & came off some of the meds so the wt gain tapered & stopped at 170 until about 5 yrs ago (age 29) when I started to slowly gain again. I am at 197 & really don't want to get any bigger. I would like to loose as much as possible to get back down to a healthy wt. I'm almost 35 & we want to get pregnant, I know I need to bring my weight down first. I'm running into some problems - we live in a small town & have NO gym w/in 60 miles. I have had problems w/ low blood sugar since I was 10 so cutting all carbs is out. & I have food allergies to things like milk & eggs. walk 2+ miles 2-3 x's a wk.

Not looking for a quick fix but some good ideas. We eat healthy, no fried foods, no fast foods & few pastas. I do drink Coke (1 a day), and have started exercising to a video set. My main concern is focusing on a diet - the exercise is coming into play already but I want to overhaul my eating habits in a way that healthy, pretty fit hubby will enjoy too. You look at all the programs out there and it becomes overwhelming

I really appreciate the comments y'all are giving. It is hard enough to admit to one's self that you have a weight problem, much less post it here for some to start bashing -- thank you for not bashing

Well 98 lbs was always too light... and 197 is probably contributing to a bit of poor health for your frame, as you already know. When your age is around say 25 years old your metabolism starts to slow naturally but you still keep on eating the same things so you will put on weight unless you do something about it. That is what has been happening to you.

The answer is always the same... you need exercise to complement those diet intentions... and that one coke you are having ...drop it... it gives you a whole stack of calories in the form of sugar, for very little enjoyment. You can get your sugar from fresh fruit for example, but see a Doctor about your diabetes to make sure the diet you intend to use is suitable. Sugar imbalances are well known to play havok with a person's ability to metabolise fat. You Doctor will therefore advise you best on maintaining stability.

Oh yes, one comment (for your husband really) I thought I would toss in.... if planning a baby... try sex instead of coke and have a cold drink of water handy!

I say this because exercise increases your metabolism which helps burn off the weight while you rest, and at the same time, you need to eat good food to maintain a strong body to do the exercises. Back off the processed foods which contain trans fats to help perserve them fo retail. Fresh is best. My family eats 20 home prepared fresh food meals a week. It is still possible.

No exercise however, means that you stay hungry and miserable in order to lose weight and when you stop dieting you put it all back on again in the form of stored energy (fat).

You don't have to have a gym to cycle on an exercise bike at home...I just got back from the gym I go to and the "cycle class" had numerous people in it that were way out of condition, more so than you could be. The thing about cycle is that you put a bit of music on and ride to it, progressively increasing the load but keeping to the beat.... you can interval train... sprint for 30 seconds... go easy for 1 minute and repeat that process over and over.. keeping your heart rate at about 150bpm. You can stand up out of the saddle and hill climb by putting more load on... you could drive 60km and do a cycle class once to get a feel for it... (although you could ride 60km once you get there) and drive home again.

Set aside 10 hours per week for yourself to ride and walk. Get a set of barbells (for you to use) and make your husband join in. It's more fun than one.

Ok so I live in Australia and there's this item you can buy from the chemist called Xenical. Im not sure if its called something different over there but im pretty sure you could still get your hands on it.
Basically what it does is when the fat goes through your intestines little enzymes come along and attch themselves and help to break up the fat, this is so the fat is small enough to penetrate the wall of ur intestines and get absorbed into your body and thats how you put on weight.
Xenical works by stopping 1 out of 3 of these enzymes attaching and therefor the fat cell is too large to be absorbed and must just go straight back out of your body through your stools. So thats up to 30% of the fat you eat being taken out again, thats fantastic!
Note that it doesnt take away any fat already absorbed in your body, but your exercise covers that.
It has no interactions with any medications and is safe to take for anyone with diseases such as asthma and diabetes.

Please if you would like to know more, email me and i can give you the specifics, i work in a pharmacy and have been extensively trained in the product.

2 ways to lose weight in the long run.
exercise
control intake of calories consumed

one and not the other will not work very well. both need to be done

exercise should include some resistance and weight training to build muscle, and some aerobic activity to burn calories and increase internal health, will also increase metabolism

diet should be balanced but the biggest thing that you can do is reduce your portions of food. reduce the amount of calories to less than what you burn throughout the day and your body will start to burn fat. a balanced diet will also help make to feel fuller and reduce hunger pangs with the smaller portions.

good luck, try to get a friend on your program as well. some support, friendly competition, and workout partner will help you on those days that you want to cheat

Continue to exercise do lots of cardio- try running or jogging as much as you can - you want to make sure you're getting that heart rate up! Run or jog at least 3-5 days out of your week. The rest of the days you can walk - but the most important and essential ingredient to weight loss is getting your heart pumping and sweating your butt off (literally!).

I'm lactose intolerant so I'll be happy to give you some nutrition advice. :) To replace your milk - substitute with a calcium-fortified soy milk (vanilla flavored goes great with cereal!) and you want to make sure you're eating a lot of chicken and fish to replace the protein that you would get from eggs.

If you want to lose fast, avoid bad foods altogether, no fast food or sugary sodas. Try to limit yourself to one or two diet sodas a day. Try to eat lots of fruits and veggies. ONLY eat fruit and other items high-sugar, high-calories in the morning! Make lunch your biggest meal. Eat 6 times daily - Three small meals, three snacks a day. Make sure you're eating a diet high in fiber and drink lots of water.

Personally, I think carb cutting is another crazy fad - I don't religiously count carbs and still manage to stay in the best shape of my life. However, try substituting your white bread and pasta into some whole grain bread and whole wheat pastas.

And again, exercise is what's gonna do it for you, so keep on running, jogging, doing those sit ups and push-ups and it shouldn't take you too long to see results!
