The SOLE purpose? No.
That is our primary purpose - We wanted the Taliban out and to deny terrorists world-wide, access to the bases and resources of Afghanistan. It also provides a Central Asian base for the forces of the United States to project power in the rest of our global war on terror as well as more mundane interests in the region.
As a side benefit, we also got to deliver freedom to the Afghans and a better life, particularly for women and children.

Combating terrorism has NOTHING to do with it!!!!!! most of the 9/11 terrorists were SAUDI.
Our presence is CREATING more terrorism than it is ridding! The main reason we are there is The Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline (TAP or TAPI) is a proposed natural gas pipeline being developed by the Asian Development Bank. The pipeline will transport Caspian Sea natural gas from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan into Pakistan and then to India. The Taliban was against it, so an invasion was key in getting Afghanistan to sign. However, with the chaos in the country, the pipleline has still not been secured, and the overall feasibility is questionable since the southern part of the Afghan section runs through territory which continues to be under de facto Taliban control.
That is why we are still there.

No, we are combating terrorism worldwide, the other reason we are there is to aid in the international reconstruction of Afghanistan, remember Afghanistan was invaded by the Soviets, then when the Soviets left, the Mujahadeen took over only to war amongst themselves, then the Taliban took over and committed many atrocities, along with allowing the terrorists a safe haven, now we have what are called Provisional Reconstruction Teams, these teams are spread out throughout Afghanistan and work directly with the local governments of the different provinces, where i was in Paktia, we had many projects that were underway, and many more promised, along with the other things that us soldiers did, we sponsored two orphanages with food and clothing, I personally started a program called shoes for kids, and we distributed over ten thousand pairs of shoes to the needy children there, no, just fighting terrorism is not our only job

Bush new he couldn't go into Iraq and leave Afghanistan untouched so he sent an inadequate force there too late, hence no Bin Laden. Iraq was always in his sights even before 9/11. Afghanistan was just an attempt to legitimise the crusade.

Well.. Only god knows what The US wants. And no they are not there to help the poor people... I belive they wanted to change the "terrorist" government in there because it could become later on a threat to US and Europe. But dont forget they are pumping oil there, so every coin has 2 sides. If US wanted to help the weman and children they could go to affrica. planty of countries who need help there...
