ok this just started about 6 hours ago...i came home from work, and noticed that my dog keeps walking in circles, she keeps wimpering, i can tell that she is in pain...she cant lay down because everytime she tries, she seems to be in pain and gets back up...she is holding her hind legs kind of wierd, its like their kind of tilted in, im planning on taking her to the vet as soon as they open, but im worried that its something serious, does anyone have any idea on what this may be

she has not thrown up, and the problem seems to either be her hip or her legs...does her walking in circles indicate anything

Take her to an Emergency Animal Hospital. Sound like she broke it. It takes alot of pain for dogs to whimper and cry.

Try and keep her quiet and comfortable. I really cannot give you any advice about over the counter pain medications because I don't know the dog plus any advice along those lines could cause more harm. You might want to consider applying an ice pack to the tail. You also might want to call the vet's office again and ask them if there is something you should do. I can understand about the money part too.

dpbrave- I know it's getting close to your Vet Opening in a few hours if you live in EST. Zone, or several hours if in PST. Either way, my point is, never be afraid to call your Vet on call and at least talk to him and let him know what is up so as to know if you need to get in at a late night hour or wait til' they open. Vets are understanding of this and Emergencies happen 24/7.
Also, is she able or has she urinated? This could tell you something.
She could have a situation with her Bladder, Kidneys, (Hope she hasn't eaten any of the foods on the recall list), a Lower GI Blockage, or she may have injured or pulled a Tendon or Ligament getting up or some "freak" deal like that.
It's hard to tell what is going on. I would take her Pulse if I were you,....Pulse varies by age, size, and breed but should be 80-120 bpm. Respiration should be about 20 per minute (10 - 30 is normal). Take her temp rectally if you can 100-102 Degrees is normal, her vitals are well......vital.
Checke her gums, if you are familiar with her usual color, it should be pink, liver, or grayish brown if that is her normal color otherwise.
Palpate her abdomen to check for any hard masses or unusual tenderness.
Take her Pulse inside her thighs, find one near her ankles/feet, and also check with your ear to chest unless you can feel it with your hand.
Make sure she is comfortable. If she becomes lethargic and anything else out of the normal develops, call the Vet anyway regardless of time.
This could be anything, and I would be remiss to otrherwise try to continue to guess.
If it were me, I would already have my Vet out of bed. I got over any guilt I would have for waking him or his family up, but, he assured me it is encouraged to do so for the sake of your pet regardless of what I had thought.
I hope all goes well.

Sounds like it could be something like "hip dyplasia" not sure of spelling that some smaller dogs seem to get specially pure breds-I had a Pomerain that got it and alls I did was rub her hip all the way down to her paw until it went away.Otherwise I think surgery may be needed or medication.

How old is your dog? My dog had that same problem, and it turned out that he had a stroke. He survived the first one, but the second one left him totally immobile and we had to put him down. Take your loved one to the vet ASAP. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Get her to the vet NOW do not delay! This could be from the food recall, our dog began soiling and in discomfort (stomach tender) sluggish, walking slow, head down, ears back, circling in confusion. Do not delay, once the neurological symptoms (shaking) comes on, it is too late- our dog had to be put down Feb 16- please email me pcsg2005@yahoo.com keep me informed!!!! I don't want to scare you, but I don't want to see another pet go through this!!
Check out http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/MenuFoodsClassAction/
And our dog did not vomit or have loose stool. Not all pets have the same illness symptoms- circling is one big symptom of this. Please make an appt get her in the vet asap, do blood test and urine test and have them put iv fluids and let them keep her overnight DO NOT FEED HER ANY CANNED FOODS OR MOIST TREATS (NOTHING CONTAINING ANY WHEAT GLUTEN INGREDIENTS)

Don't they have an emergency vet where you live? Check in the phonebook , or call your vet's number and see if they have a recorded message giving an out of hours number. Good luck!
