The occupants of ten and eleven Downing Street have had their own keys for years.

Criminals are getting too much freedom to do things when they are behind bars. They get to sue when their human rights are breached whilst they are punished.

Prisons are there to punish people and they should be locked up 22 hours a day and not given a chance to whinge about their human rights - they never gave a damn about their victims did they?

After all if you cant do the time dont do the crime!

I was imprisoned for minor crime of a non violent, non sexual and non drug related crime. I photocopied an insurance certificate or 10 and got caught.

We got our own keys to the cell at Ranby and Stocken. The thing is - that key ONLY fits your door. It DOES NOT operate the locks on the gates. It has been happening for years.

You can't hide or lock yourself in your cell, since the prison officers have a 'special' key which unlocks all doors.

Rest assured that, just because Fred the Burglar has his own key, he isn't getting out!

My husband is in prison due to a non-violent crime. If my husband were given his own cell key, it would bother me to NO end!

If an inmate is given their own key, they could go from cell to cell and who knows what would happen. More violence could happen and other activities that should not be happening would happen, such as "lending and borrowing" things.

The purpose of prison is "supposed to be", to rehabilitate the person and have them learn from their mistakes. One of the ways is to keep a person on a strict schedule (when to eat, when to get up, when to go to the day room, etc). Many things are privileges, such as use of the day room, phones, work out room, and so on. These privileges are taken away as a form of punishment and the inmates need to work their way up to receive their privileges back.

By giving an inmate a key to their own cell, they can do what they want and when they want. It would be unfair when the Correctional Officers say "Lock down" in order to figure out what is going on among the inmates and then they are unable to maintain control of the situation. The Correctional Officers and other inmates could get hurt.

Maybe burglars do not get keys, and are left to their own devices.

what a great idea for a t.v. reality show. put the politicians in jail, and put the prisoners in parliament, and i bet we would finish up better off.

The thing is this. These persons are imprisoned as a punishment. They have had their liberty removed. Then we give it back to them by giving them a key? WTF.
