The interior would not cook fully without a hole in the center.

Another riveting theory is that sea captain Hanson Gregory, found it impossible both to steer his vessel and eat his fried cake. Out of frustration, he impaled his cake over one of the spokes of the ship's wheel, creating a finger hold.

There are 2 type ot donuts - with and withouth holes! I think people might have started making donuts with a holes since its much more interesting than the other one.
But in european culture since ancient times circle and ring represents the Sun, which was believed to be the paramount power, so its ring form may reperesents sun!
Other reason why some donuts have holes is that they have less calorie than full donuts:)
It can be also because the when a cheff was making a donut for the first time he didn't have enought chocolate and sugar powder for a whole donut and made it a hole so that it fits:)

So you can wear them like a ring.

Not all doughnuts have holes.

A small, typically ring-shaped pastry that is usually leavened with yeast or baking powder, and which can be baked but is generally fried. The traditional doughnut shape is formed by using a special doughnut cutter that cuts out the center hole in the dough. It can also be made with two biscuit cutters, large and small (for the hole). Fried doughnut holes are favorites with children. There are two main styles of doughnuts. Raised doughnuts are leavened with yeast and allowed to rise at least once before being fried. Besides the traditional ring-shape, raised doughnuts also come in squares and twists. Additionally, the dough is used to make oblong and round jelly-filled doughnuts — commonly called jelly doughnuts. Cake doughnuts receive their leavening power from baking powder and are chilled before frying to prevent the dough from absorbing too much oil in the process. The dough for cake doughnuts is often flavored with spices, orange or lemon zest or chocolate. Crullers are made from cake-doughnut dough. They're formed by twisting two (about 5-inch) strips of dough together before frying. Both types are usually either dusted with granulated sugar (cake doughnuts often with confectioners' sugar) or topped with a flavored glaze (such as chocolate or butterscotch). French doughnuts, though not as readily available as the other two types, are made with choux pastry (cream-puff pastry dough). They're very tender and light.

Most likely it was to allow for even cooking as the center may not cook fully. I found that out when I bit into a buttermilk bar, it was still wet in the center.

Because it allows them to cook more evenly. Without a hole the edges would cook faster than the middle and they might burn before the middle is done. Some brilliant chef came up with this idea to avoid that problem. :)

because the middle part of the donut is raw so they cut it into hole

when they first started making them, they couldn't get the middle bit to cook properly, so they used to cut it out
