When I backpack, I always plan ahead the states I want to go. Then I go to the embassy of that country. They will provide maps and info about their country, mostly free of charge. You can ask them about the visa. Before you go to the embassy, it is best that you give them a call to know their operating hours.

i would recommend planes, boats are slow and cold, it would take forever, people travel all the time, dont worry about that, but look out for backpackers, they will steal your stuff
