i bought deep fried calamari rings from the fish and chip shop.upon my family eating them we noticed some with what looked and felt like an elastic band within the batter with the calamari ring.the shop said it naturally occurs with them.is this so or have i been duped ?

Yeah i've had calimari like that. I just pulled out that really chewy rubbery bit that you described and ate the rest. I wouldnt say you were duped, just unlucky. Maybe it was poor quality or something because its not always like that

best case scenario: you were served overfried, and probably not the freshest squid was used... but I have never seen anything you are describing in the calamari i've eaten; if the entire dish was the same as described, and had very thin pieces, i could see it appearing that way, but even then, seafood is touchy on the stomach, for me at least, and is definitely a food that should not be eaten unless you are sure who cooked it and how- go for quality with this product, save yourself a stomachache

calamari a.k.a. calamares is made by squids covered with cornstarch.
when cooked squids is really elastic, hard to eat but definitely delicious! worth to eat.
