I haven't eaten anything apart from a single tin of soup in 6 days now.
I desperately need to know what I can use that is EFFECTIVE at relieving the pain of a mouthful of ulcers.
Don't bother suggesting Bonjela or similar because if you've ever suffered then you know things like that, actually hurt a single ulcer.
I have quite a few so it hurts immensely!

All I want to know is what I can use as an effective pain relief measure so that I can eat something!

Please help!

To everyone that is telling me about the 'underlying cause' and 'being run down'.
I don't care about that.
I want pain relief.
That's all. If the pain lessens enough then I can eat.
I know whats caused this just tell me how I can reduce the pain I am in!

If you get these ulcers recurrently you may well have some sort of immune or nutritional deficiency. Don't go to your doctor, go to the dentist especially if you have a nice angry ulcer which can be examined.

I think you already know that most mother's remedies are barely effective. With treatment the ulcers start to get better in 7 days, without it takes a week. Your dentist may be able to provide a little topical local anaesthetic that you can rub on the ulcer to calm it down so you can eat.

As an aside, why do people recommend going to the Doctor when someone has a mouth problem. Would you go to the dentist for a hysterectomy?

Good lick

It will hurt like hell but will clear it up for you - as hot as you can stand & as strong as you can stand, prepare a salt solution with lots of salt & hot water. Hold the liquid in your mouth for a few secondes then spit it out. Repeat until all the cup is gone. Repeat every 2-4 hours & you will feel much better. If you are prone to mouth ulcers, try changing your toothpaste to one that doesn't contain sodium lauryl sulphate - this is often enough to stop you getting any more if this is the cause. There may be something lacking in your diet in which case it would be worth consulting a nutritionalist.
Hope you soon get some relief - and food!

Put 2-3 drops of pure tea tree essential oil in a glass and filled it with water to gargle a few times a day, then use a cotton bud to apply tea tree oil neat on the ulcer, you have to get over the unpleasant taste initially. To prevent an ulcer from full blown, repeat the same whenever you are about to have one. The ulcer will dry up quickly..

A faster and natural cure is salt. I used this in my army days. Very painful at the first time. Immediately your ulcer starts to heal.

- rinse your mouth
- put white salt on your ulcer
- endure as long as you can but not more than 15 second.
- rinse your mouth again.
- wrap off your tears.

carafate (prescription drug) will help. Our family always used Lump Alum (you can get it in the spice aisle of major supermarkets) and just set it on the ulcers. We were told they were 'lie bumps'.
You can also wet a plain tea bag (like Lipton's or whatever black tea mix you have around) and set it on there to help draw out the soreness. Works good on pain from having teeth pulled too. Hope you get relief soon, you've had a lot of wonderful answers. Oh also try anbusol, it has benzecain in it which is a topical pain killer.

i get ulcers in my mouth due to being a brittle diabetic. this is what i do...use a sore throat spray to numb the ulcers. it does burn a bit at first, but really relieves the pain. rinse your mouth several times a day with apple cider vinegar. try to swish it around for at least 30 seconds. it will balance the ph level of your mouth, and it cures the ulcers faster than anything i've ever tried before. it's not the greatest tasting stuff, but it really works. best of luck to you for a quick recovery.

I don't know how to spell it correctly but Manuka honey applied directly on to the ulcer will help in a matter of hours. Its not cheap though. Health Food shops will have it.
