If you have an informed opinion that may hurt the feelings of any of a number of ethnic minorities / homosexuals / lesbians / Muslims / x / y / z, shut up! Can't we all just get along? :-)

We keep a compulsory harmony in an ideologically mixed society by policing any minority views that cause tension. How idiotic.

Maybe it's because of my never going with the flow. My own individualism. I have controversial opinions but I ALWAYS intellectually back them up. And that's more than I can say for a lot of people here.

So please, if you're an animal rights activist / 'ban religion' fan / gay / lesbian / man dating a girl half his age / Muslim / pro-Palestinian and we argue, give me your opinion in as intellectually sound a way instead of joining the ignorant politically correct masses.

Gay. Proud. Jokes and opinions don't hurt anyone, and are a part of life. Anyone who rings the alarm everytime they are offended is actually much worse off than they would be if they just grew from each barb that came their way. It's sad, I think.

I think that some people make way too much of "PC" as if its some hobgoblin that is forcing them to act or speak one way or another. Exactly HOW is a person being "restricted" in their speech or actions?

But, I also believe in simple common social courtesies. What is the point of just being verbally brutal with slurs and labels and intentionally antagonizing others? What is the point? Freedom of speech?

Write this down: all freedoms have limits. Some are common sense and some are utilitarian. If I have to explain that to you, you're in trouble.

Now, if a person wants to open their mouth and confirm to the world that he/she is a totally insensitive a$$, I guess you can't stop 'em.

Ann Coulter comes to mind. This woman is NOT held in any great regard as a writer or speaker by any of the many respected columnists that receive honors like Pulitzer prizes. She's Howard Stern in a dress.

Agrees with Heron. Being polite and being "PC" aren't neccessarily the same thing.

We SHOULD try to keep the discussion civil.

If not, well, I do believe in Freedom of Speech after all! If you irritate me, I'll just ignore you, as everyone should. But if you're polite, more people will actually listen to what you have to say. Try it sometime.

If you have an opinion on something you should be able to share it without fear of being labeled a bigot. But on the other hand, you should give that opinion in a tactful way, and not purposely try to offend somebody.

The minority of idiots who use this "correctness" as a weapon either for or against is a waste of time. Usually used to spread one's own beliefs. Seems to be a favorite tool of the right wing.

Usually "political correctness" is just common courtesy. There's no reason to use a term which is offensive to someone, if you can use a better term.
