I don't think you want him to use the letterbox, bit of a shock for the postman! :-)
However if you want them to use a litterbox, try situating the box in a relatively private place away from their food. Also try putting the box in what is currently their favourite place to poo. Also when you see them about to go, pop them in their litterbox quick, they should get the idea soon enough!

I'm assuming you mean a "litterbox" rather than getting them to crawl in and out through your letterbox, lol?
Anyway, the best thing to do is to keep and eye on them and each time you see them squatting, pick them up and put them in the litter tray.
If they have an accident while you're out, show the cat the mess and then put him in the tray. They're very smart and should soon learn.
Usually cats are very clean animals and will be slow to urinate in their own living space. Just make sure that you clean the areas that they have been using very well (cos often they'll go back to the last place they used). You could try a couple of drops of vinegar on the old spots, as they won't like the smell and will avoid it.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck!

why would you want your cats to use the letterbox? oh do you mean LITTERBOX?
if you have already ruled out a medical condition like a urinary tract infection.
if that is normal then put your cat in a small room with the litterbox and some water (food at feeding times of course) and he/she will learn that he/she will have to use the litter box or live in the waste.

Confine them to one room for a while - with their litterbox and bed and food.
Sounds like they are getting lost - they have the run of the house and are forgetting where the litter tray is.
Keep them in the one room for a week or so, depending on how old they are. The let then out, but supervise them. And then put them back when you cant watch them. When you see they go back to the litter box on their own then you can let them have the run of the house.
You will have to thoroughly clean the places they have pee'd and poo'd. To get rid of the odour properly soak the areas where they peed with white vinegar. This neutralises it.

every time you feed them your suppose to place them right into the litter box, now they might not learn right away so keep a eye on them. If they start going around in circles and sitting down, grab them and take them to the litter box. They need to learn to go to the litter box. The mother cat is really suppose to teach them that at the end of the fourth week. How old are these kittens?? good luck!

Always put the kittens in the box when they're about to go, or even if they have already gone. If they can easily get to the litter box and can smell that they should go in there they will learn.

just watch when they're about to 'go' and quickly put them in the litterbox. cats naturally like to cover their business, so make sure there is plenty of litter in the box (3 inchs deep).
make sure the litterbox is easy to get to but private as well.
also some cats hate the scented litter. and make sure the kitties can easily get in the box.

Litter Box Essentials
A big factor in your cat's urinary tract health, as well as peace in your household, is his acceptance of the litter box. Here are resources for litter box supplies, along with discussions on what works and what doesn't.

When you find poo put it in the litter tray and find your kittens and put them in the tray with their poo. That's what I did and it took a few days but after that my kittens started using it. I guess once they smell it and see where it is they will just know that thats where to go. LOL!
