I think that this is only a problem of a luck of long-time strategy of US foreign policy....in the last 10 years they are resolving a problem causing a bigger problem right after.... After the first Gulf War a lot of Allied soldiers stayed in Arabic Peninsula causing the resent of islamic extremists, also ex-friends like Ben Laden ( because it is considered a sacred land and no "unfaithful" can stay there), then to defeat these extremists they invaded Afganistan, because the government was protecting terrorists, but this did not resolved the problem, so they invaded Irak, resolving the little problem of the Saddam regime and causing the bigger problem of an open conflict with a lot of lossen also between the allied forces, and today the US is so involved in the Irak situation that probably(almost sure) they are not able to choose a military option against Iran unless withdrawing from Irak(except only air forces raids that will probably not resolve the situation, especially in the long period...).
Ah, you wrote about stingers in Afganistan, but what about F-14 "Tomcat" fighters of the IIAF(Iranian Islamic Air Force) or AH-1 "Cobra" attack helicopters and CH-47 transport helicopter of the Iranian Army...and the Hawk anti-aircraft missile system...a little more advanced than stingers although not so insidious because easier to locate...

In the early years Russia was helping Afghanisthan by building bridges, making schools etc.
However Afghanisthan was deeply divided & the US funded the rebel powers (which incidentally were right wing islamic) so that Russia's position in Afghanisthan would weaken.
When Russia realised this, it made a huge mistake. It reacted by force & started a war. It thought it would supress the right-wing pro-islam group & with the left-wing Afghan party back in power, they would again be in quasi-control. This is where they went wrong & they under estimated the muslim unity in Afghanistan.
Initially the war was going Russia's way , until the US finally decided to give Stinger Missiles to the Afghans ....... That changed the war & the dreaded soviet choppers were soon being blasted out of the sky & with the cost of war mounting Russia decided to withdraw.
The US was happy then , but after 9/11 they would have repented.
Even today US supports Pakistan which is supposed to be the hot-bed or breeding ground of terrorism.

Ummmm, Rambo was a movie but I know what you're getting at. The people we help today turn on us tomorrow and we look like idiots. The Russians are a part of the reason that Afghanistan is/was such a mess. They went in to take over the place, spread Communism, made a mess and then left. It does make sense to get their help because there are a lot of soldiers left who fought there that know the area and can be of use. We can also learn from their mistakes not to mention they're the ones who left the place wide open for the taliban to take over so it's their mess. It's a matter of building alliances and not abandoning them when we think the job is done. PS, I'm in Afghanistan right now.

Russia will not go into Afghanistan because they got their tails handed to them. They were also much more brutal than the Americans or EU peacekeepers there would ever imagine being. The Soviets killed well over a million Afghans, without even giving it second thoughts. Now, radical Islamic sects are dealing with Russia. Politics makes strange bedfellows. The only logic is to let Afghanistan choose the destiny of their choice. If they choose to turn back the clock to the 7th century as the Taliban want to do, let them. It's their country, let them dictate their own futures.

The russians have changed and the afghans have changed not to mention the newly arrived taliban foreighners.
Nothing new in changing alliances. In WW2 Italy changed sides, also Roumania and Bulgaria. France fought against germany, then against the UK/US, then again against germany. The USSR started that war as an ally of Hitler, then became his worst enemy.
You tell me where is the logic of fighting a war to liberate a country, then hand it over to the enemy on a plate- gift wrapped too. For examples look up China, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Laos, Iran. And if the Dems have their way, Iraq and Israel will follow.

I heard that Russia is helping Afghan people in war with NATO.
Rambo is an icon for the veteran Vietnam's war.
Hollywood should choose another hero after the end either in Afghanistan or Iraq.

So you're saying Rambo should be declared a terrorist against the United States?
By the way show us a single instance of a plane being shot down by a stinger, you're thinking of helicopters. :P

What logic its politic. its all S_H-I_T George W. Bush is like Hitler he only wants power that's it. His parents didn't care enough about him properly. He properly didn't get enough love from his parents. He is cruel. He only cares about himself. And I don't think that he only wants to help them in Irak and so. He only wants the oil and he only wants to kill people. He is dumb. That's all.
