In the morning usually it is less formal if the weather is warm than a sun dress would be nice than CHANGE into something more formal for the church and reception Time of day often tells you the formality also when a church service is involved usually it is to be semi formal to formal as well look at the invite that can tell you a lot
And If still in doubt ask the person issuing the invite a question can't be answered with out first the question being asked

You can wear anything you want!
But maybe it's not the best idea to wear something totally white...
I'd say, wear something not to posh ( a nice skirt) in the morning at the civil ceremony. You don't have to change for the religion ceremony but I would wear an evening gown for the party... maybe even an Asian one as they are so beautiful...
And why don't you ask your friend? She'll be able to help you.
Good luck and have a great time at the wedding!

Avoid wearing any outfit that is solid black, white, or red. They're not culturally appropriate in most Western social circles, for a wedding guest to wear.
Wear a dress, or nice pantsuit. Nothing too revealing because their church might be very conservative and not allow bare arms or short skirts for women, etc. Or, have a cover-up like a shawl, bolero, or nice sweater, for the church portion of the day.
You shouldn't have to change in between, but if your hotel is nearby, I suppose you could.

Actually, I'm answering with an additional question: Do French women still wear hats to weddings, and if so, can anyone point me to any certain styles? I'm assuming the hat would only be worn to the religious ceremony and vin d'honneur, and not to the evening dinner, right?
