I suppose it helps unify a culture and its people and give them a consistent identity. That could help with social and political stability.

Religion gives order and direction in your life. Just like direction when you need to go to wal-mart and the parking lines that you have to follow in the parking area.

Some might argue that modern and civilized men (and women) are able distinguish between right and wrong, truth and falsehood without the aid of a religion. But these are the same people who would kill each other over who go first if you are to remove traffic lights from their roads.

Then again, being civilised and being mordern are two different things and are not necessarily interdependent.

It is not an easy question to answer...In early European society, Church organized schools ( they were not the public
schools in modern sense, but they gave certain people humanistic as well as natural science education available at
that time...) Later on with growth of science, Church took on
a role of God's advocate, which effectively prevented progress in certain periods of medieval time...
Thereafter, it can be said Church roll in growth of civilization
was important in the beginning; they established some kind of
codex to be respected by all Christians, which was good at a
time, but as we all know, human being is of free will and
secularizing values were bound to come sooner or later...

It doesn't help growth, it inhibits it. If the religious had their way, we'd still be cave men. Only when people challenge the limited thinking religion teaches, does a civilization grow.

The highest aim of creation and its most sublime result is belief in God. The most exalted rank of humanity is the knowledge of God. The most radiant happiness and sweetest bounty is the love of God contained within the knowledge of God; the purest joy for the human spirit and the purest delight for man’s heart is the spiritual ecstasy contained within the love of God.

From belief follow the different kinds of worship of God: worship that is responsive to explicit injunctions like the prescribed prayers, fasting, alms-giving and pilgrimage; worship that is obedient to the prohibitions such as against drinking alcohol, gambling, usury, killing, deception, etc. In order both to strengthen one’s belief and to attain higher ranks of perfection, one should be careful about the ‘acts’ of the heart and intellect, such as contemplation or reflection, invocation or recitation of God’s Names, self-criticism, perseverance and patience, thankfulness, disciplined living, perfect reliance on God, and so on. Moral virtues are the ‘fruits’ of religious life; the Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings, said: I have been sent to perfect the virtues.

Divine Religion also has rules to regulate man’s collective life. Through belief and worship, and through its intellectual, moral and spiritual principles, Islam aims to educate the individual in the best way possible; through its social and economic principles, it aims to establish an ideal society. Its final aim is that there should be no dissension, corruption, anarchy and terror in the world and that all people may obtain happiness in both worlds.

Religion doesn't promote GROWTH of civilization. It promotes HYPOCRACY and strives to force it's ideals and beliefs down the throats of everyone who chooses to believe differently. Regardless of which religion, each feels that theirs is THE ONLY truth and uses it to justify judgementality, narrow-mindness and illusions of superiority over anyone who doesn't agree.
