Your mind tricks you when sometimes you're only thirsty, but you think you're hungry. So instead of just sipping some water you satisfy your self by eating.

So the trick is to be in control yourself. When you feel hungry try just to drink some water see if it satisfy your hunger, if not then have a bite of fruits not some junk food w/c loaded with tons of unwanted calories. You have tobe patience, It just a practice keep doing it and you're body will adjust to that.

Try keeping plenty of raw vegetables and fruit to snack on, you can eat these and they won't put weight on.

If you have given up smoking you will find you want to eat more because your hands are missing something to do, so maybe take up a hobby for when you are sat down in the evening, when you would normally have cigarettes.

Whatever you do *do not* go throwing up your food as someone else suggested! Not only does this mean you are not getting any of the goodness (vitamins etc) from your food, but you can also cause your teeth to rot from the stomach acid. You will also get bad breath from this, even if you can't notice it yourself. Kind of defeats one of the reasons for giving up smoking doesn't it?

Drink plenty of water. Sometimes you will actually be dehydrated rather than hungry and your body can't tell the difference. You should be drinking at least 3 or 4 litres of water a day.

Another thing is that if you have joined the gym your metabolism may be getting faster, which means you are burning fat quicker and this is making you more hungry. Make sure the food you eat has plenty of carbs in it (pasta, bread, potatoes) as this will fill you up for longer.

Don't buy things like crisps or sweets, that way if they are not in the house then you won't eat them. Allow yourself a treat every now and then, so that you don't end up binge eating.

Speak to a doctor, or ask at the gym if there is a nutritionist you can talk to. He/she should be able to help advise you.

Well done for giving up smoking and going to the gym! It's hard to do everything at once, and you need to train your body and brain in to new and better habits. This take time :)

This is a very common reaction to giving up smoking. The good news is that even if you put on weight that's less damaging to your health than the smoking.

Be stricter with portion control, if necessary weigh everything. Look at what you are eating. Try substituting high calorie snacks for lower ones. You could be substititing one habit (smoking) with another (eating) so try putting another habit in there instead that is less destructive, for example taking a quick stroll or doing a sudoku puzzle or whatever.

Finally, go easy on yourself, don't try and change everything in one go. You've done a great thing for you health giving up smoking and it's not easy, give yourself time to resolve the eating problem, don't expect it to go overnight.

Good luck

change what you eat.

keep a vottle of water with you at all times so you can sip on that instead of snack.

keep wasabi peas and dark chocolate with you to snack on. the strong flavor will stick to your mouth so you can snack less.

instead of 3 biggish meals split it into 5-6 smaller ones so you can have bigger snscks throughout the day

dont kill youself about every calorie. quitiing smoking is worth a few pounds, and as long as you stay aware of it, as the cig cravings go away you will drop whatever weight you might put on.

good luck!

If you are eating sweet foods it could be because sugar increases the appetite. Try for high protein foods with a little bit of healthy fat in them. If you are in the middle of a binge and can't stop, I found it helps to chew a piece of sugar-free mint gum, which gets you to stop eating long enough to realize you aren't hungry.

I had this problem due to a medication, and gained 10 lbs last month, well I told myself if I don't do something now, then I will just gain more weight, which I refuse to do, but anyway, it's not the healthiest of ways, but stop eating, and possibly throw up all the food you do eat and take a multi vitamin. I lost 15 lbs last week, the only draw back is...you get the runs like a motherf**ker. But I lost more than I wanted, and now I just have to eat like a bull of tomatoes a day. I forgot to mention, I did eat a handful of gummi bears thru out my fast. I did not throw them up.
