I really don't know how to describe it other than that. Its a very oil/tar like smell. Its not all the time but once in awhile its just horrible. Is this something that I should be concerned with? Does anyone know what causes it?

It could be the diet you have. You should try eating different foods. Make a diary for the next month. Keep records of what you ate and where you ate take-out foods. Then record the results of each bowel movement. After doing this for a month or so you might notice some sort of pattern. Try eating yogurt and fresh fruit. Take this diary with you to a G I doctor if it continues.

You should see your doctor and get a check up as this doesn't sound very good at all.

It must be something you've eaten. If it keeps on going like that...
then you better consult your doctor.
