NEVER run a mocrowave oven without any food item in it. in case you do it by mistake also, immediatel put a glass of water in the micro and let it stand for 10 mts. to absorbe all the rays.After that leave the mocrowave door open for 10 mts before you use it again.
PREHEATING in a micro is done only if you have a micro/convectional oven/grill. ENSURE your settings are on the convectional oven and then you can pre heat it according to your recipe requirement.

Never, I mean never try to boil an egg in water in a microwave. I damned near got killed over that mistake. And I've owned my microwave since 1990(Its a Tappan) Still running like new! I've never had to preheat in a microwave, You must be refering to a conventional oven, which you do have to preheat.

Whack it on for 30 seconds with nothing in it before you put your food in to cook!
