Most of the depictions we see of Jesus were made by Europeans, and therefore they give him European rather than Semitic features (which is why he always looks more Italian than Israeli) and Renaissance style, namely his long hair. But have none of them read the Bible? Specifically 1 Cor 11:14: "Does not nature itself teach you that for a man to wear long hair is degrading to him...?" Do you think Jesus might have degraded himself with long hair, or is it more likely that the people who depicted him never read this part?

Well..

In my point of view, I think it matters to specifically know "how long is 'long hair'"?

In the old days, men usually had their hair long enough to reach the sholder, but never being longer then that.

So that might open another window of discussion to your point.

Peace.

Because according to the old Jewish Hermetics Messiah would be several people or several things, a King (of the line of David), a Priest (of the Mechelzedek line out of the tribe of Levi), a Prophet, and a Nazirite (an old jewish sect that were consecrated at a young age to service of God, they never cut their hair. It was consider a significatn religious vow).

It was not customary for all Jews to wear long hair it was one of the outward signs of being a Nazirite. Look it up.

By the way Sampson was a Nazirite that is why cutting his hair was such a criminal act it annuled his vow and removed his strength. The vow of the Nazirite comes from Numbers.

The reason Jesus is always depicted with long hair is because in Jewish culture in their day according to the Law of Moses, men were not to shave the sides of their heads nor shave their beards. So, Jewish men would sometime let their hair grow long and braid the ends of it. This why you hear mention Of Samson with long braided hair. Long braided hair was something which was only associated with men in Jewish culture. The scripture in 1 Cor 11:14 means something totally different. The term "long hair" in 1 Cor 11:14 in it's greek meaning means to have the authority of a woman. Or, a man who walks in the authority of a woman or, suggests he is feminine in nature. 1 Cor 11:14 deals with the natural ordained order which God created. Christ is the head, man is the head of woman and not woman the head of man. Which is what was happening in the Corithian church. Women were becoming heads of their households over the men.

Generally, most Jews during Jesus' time wear their hair long. So the people who painted a picture of Him might have only based it on a general picture of a Jew. In 1Cor 11:14, Paul was addressing this to the Gentiles.

Remember that the Bible tells you much about the life of Jesus at a later stage of his life...

There is one thing that all Christians object to--- Jesus studied in India long, long time ago. He was a Sadhu and his teachings are comparable to those of the ancient Indian sages.

Probably that was why his hair was so long.

There was a time in history when the only men with long hair were Kings , everybody else had lice and kept their heads shaved. Thus, it was a sign of royalty to have long hair.

I've gone as Euro Jesus for Halloween before - I look like the stereotype, not like the historical likelihood tells us.

Of course, one little girl told me I looked like Qui-Gon Jinn, so whatever.

It was the custom of the time for men to have 'long' hair.

It's 'long' to us, but it wasn't to them. Women are the ones who had the loooooooong hair.
