I am trying to find out the best way to get rid of popcorn ceilings, the previous owners had the entire house (basement included) done with this STUFF, and it has been painted over. I would like to find out the best way to rid our home of this, w/o putting up new sheet-rock. Any suggestions?

We just did this in our home. I would suggest that you cover everything with a plastic to protect this stuff from getting on your valuable things, you may even want to empty the room and cover the floor with plastic. Then take a wide puddy knife and begin to scrape, you may want to wet it for easier removal. The stuff will just pop off and you will be left with a smooth surface underneath. You may have to fill in some of the nail holes with spackling and you can purchase that at home depot or any hardware store. Then you will need to take a very fine sand paper and sand the ceiling, wipe off the dust and check to make sure there are no holes that show, and you are ready to put a primer on and then the paint. It is a messy job, but it looks so nice after it is done. My husband is a Union Carpenter and has done this kind of work for years.Good luck.
