Hi, I'm from the US and I am interested in moving to Aus after college. What towns are good? I've been thinking either Brisbane or Goldcoast... I want nothing farther South that Sydney. How much is rent usually? Is it hard to find a job? I'm in art school, is there a good art scene is certain areas? Thanks!

Have you guys been to Darwin? It's probably too humid for me, but I'm curious about it. It would be a great opportunity to travel and work on my portfolio (in photography)
If I move to Aus, it'll probably be after I have my masters. Does it help to have a degree when you emmigrate?
How much does rent for a studio or one bedroom flat cost usually?

You're in luck! I happen to be a dual Aussie citizen and American citizen. For a young, single person with no kids, I'd recommend Sydney, Surfers Paradise at the Gold Coast or Melbourne for you.

In the big cities rent is dependent on if you live near the sea/ocean, closer to the city or further away from the city. If you leave close to beaches/ocean, the rent is usually higher; also, if you live in posh, apartments close to the city. Rent is always cheaper further away from the water and the city. You can rent on your own or get room-mates. Check the websites below for more details on renting apartments etc.

Finding a job depends on what area you want to work in. If you want a job in the art area, it is really going to be tough career choice/area.

Also, depending on what you want to do, you will need a work visa or try for an immigration visa. Immigration(permanent residency) visa will require that you have a skill that is in short supply in Australia---mostly healthcare professionals are needed. You can also get a work visa, if you find an employer willing to sponsor you for a work visa. Check our Aussie immigration website as listed below)

As far as jobs and accommodation are concerned, check out the classified adverts in the newspapers on Saturdays. The Sydney Morning Herald is at http://www.smh.com.au
The Brisbane Courier Mail is (probably) at http://www.couriermail.com.au (I don't know for sure, I haven't checked it).

Melbourne tries hard and is a great city but it will always play second fiddle to Sydney. Everything Melbourne has, Sydney has (but Melbournites won't agree). Sydney and Brisbane both have great art scenes.

Darwin is a great town, I am there at the moment. While most people come in the dry season (May to September), you will get some very dramatic skyscapes and photos in the wet season - and it's cheaper to live in Darwin then.

From your criteria Sydney would be your best bet as far as seeking to get into the art scene. Melbourne is a great city also but it is south of Sydney. Brisbane is a nice city but in relation to opportunity in art etc. Sydney would have more variety and options.

I found a free e-book on Australia cities that might be a help to you. www.LetsgotoAustralia.com

First of all, you have to think about what visa you'll apply for to stay here. You'll need a visa that gives you permanent residency so you can work, and be covered under medicare.

It's hard work obtaining visas, the ones you can get involve student visas, work visas for surgeons and other desperately needed professions, and those who have family that are Australians.

I'm currently going for the spousal visa. My fiance, Australian, and I have been living together for a year, a requirement for the spousal visa. I've been here on a year visa, but I don't have medical coverage and I'm not allowed to work. It'll take two more years for my spousal visa to go through, and my permanent residency to be granted. It definitely is not an easy process.

As for a couple of your questions, Melbourne is a beautiful, very arty town. Southbank always has art all along the river, it's all very beautiful and romantic.

Downloading it could the first-class choice. There is a likelihood that a few Pay TV mobs have it of their programs. However, I doubt it could be are living. One of the channels indicates your Gridiron Superbowl grand last are living, as it's daylight right here. I've visible Baseball in pubs, however it's not are living and I dont believe it was once the grand last. The World Cup is on in September, watch that as a substitute and cheer for the Wallabies, or your USA Eagles. Good good fortune with the transfer

Melbourne is the best city in the world, it's been voted twice. It has best prices, best weather, best housing, best everything.
