Hi,
My dog's name is Rico, he is an 11-month Golden Retriever. He is energetic and I believe I am a bit late for neutering.. but it's never too late! Anyways, I saw him humping our neighbor's 7-month male puppy! Which really freaked me out!
I was thinking of neutering him next week .. Do you think it's a waste to neuter him? Or do you think I should neuter him asap? I'm afraid he might get anesthesia (excessive blood) from the surgery. Is there a possibility he dies in surgery? Can you please tell me what I should do?

You're being a good and responsible owner! =)
Firstly, IT IS NOT A WASTE TO NEUTER HIM. In fact, its advisable to, as it prevents future complications and diseases. And yes, you should neuter him asap. If not, he'll continue humping other dogs and even people, which is a bad habit. He won't be losing too much blood if the surgery's done by the vet, and compared to a female dog, a male dog's neutering surgery is very simple so there is no cause for worries.
You're doing the right thing and the best thing for your dog and other dogs in the world, because so many of them are dying you're helping to prevent more dying and abandoned dogs. *a pat on the back for you.

It's never too late to spay/neuter. The chances of anything going that wrong while neutering is very slim. I would talk any concerns or worries over with Rico's vet. Neutering is by far, the best and safest option in the long run. While he is not neutered, he will start humping more often, spraying and marking in your house, is more at risk for certain (usually life-threatening) cancers and he is more prone to wonder around your neighbourhood, looking for females in heat to mate with. Neutering will totally or almost completely eliminate all of these points.

Your dog is fine to be neutered. There is risk in ever surgery tough, But neutering is very common and I don't hear to often that anything goes wrong. I would be Leary about finding a cheap vet though. Use the vet you have always used for your dog. Stay away from those once a day neuter special. You really want the best care of your dog. So find a good one. Good luck and don't worry, your dog will be fine.

No one is really addressing the issue. The reason your dog was humping the pup was to show dominance........ He is not gay or mentally imbalanced. Neutering him will not change this problem....... The only difference is if he is Neutered he will not be able to make puppies. It will not stop him from doing the deed........He is still a puppy, he just needs some training and maturity behind him....... There is also risk in ANY sergical proceedure..... You can control the "pet population" by controling your animal as well. I have been a breeder for many years and have NEVER had any of my animals neutered...... and have NEVER had and unwanted pregnancies either way...... As for your dog getting another pregnant...... This is only possible if the female is in heat (ready to breed) and this only happens 2 times a year for about a week to 10 days....... Controlling your pet is the KEY.

Anaesthesia is the drugs/procedure that makes your animal sleep during surgery :-)
It's never too late to neuter, it can be done in older animals. It most certainly will not be a waste, as it will stop him impregnating a female dog and giving someone the responsibility of puppies. It will also prevent him developing prostate cancer, a fairly common condition in older, uncastrated dogs.
Dog castration is a common, routine operation. I haven't seen a dog die from it yet (touch wood!). If you're nervous, get the vet to go through the whole procedure of anaesthetising and operating with you. The dog should be in and out within a day, and most are completely back to normal by the next day. Please book him in ASAP!

There is always a chance they can die in surgery due to complications. But you should neuter just so he doesn't make babies that some one may not want and abuse or dump them off some where. Surgery is a hard decision just ask your vet about the risks.
