We make the sign of the cross for several reasons, including the following: - It symbolizes the Trinity, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit ( all worship is done in the name of the Trinity). In the Eastern rite the thumb, index and middle fingers are held together when making the Sign of the Cross to further emphasize the concept of Trinity.

- It symbolizes Christ’s sacrifice for us on the cross.

- It symbolizes Trinity, Incarnation, Redemption.

- We point to the forehead to recognize the supreme intellect of the Father as creator, the heart to signify the love of the Son who died for us, and the shoulders to signify the strength of the Spirit (shoulders are strong, used to carry a yoke).

I don't cross myself anymore - because I'm no longer a Catholic. But honestly - the reason I crossed myself was because my mother and the nuns told me to do it - so I did. Pretty much out of fear - I think. I never questioned it. We were not allowed to question much. I left the church at 17.

One night - years after that - I was sitting around with a bunch of friends - and we were talking about Jesus being crucified - and somebody said - "Well, if he came today - he'd be put to death in the electric chair. How do you make the sign of the electric chair?"

Do you mean make the sign of the cross?

I make the sign of the cross while in mass, but also when passing a graveyard ( to show respect for the dead ) and also when passing a church (respect to God)
