Is there a type of intercom software I can install on my computer?

Like for a network of computers? I don't want to use AIM or other IM's because I don't want to talk to people other than those in the same building or house....

You could always use Skype. Its just like an IM program, but voice (you can type as well). Its free so you may want to give it a try.
