Here's something creative that will be appreciated and you will have fun doing:
Make up a crossword puzzle and have all the hints be personal inside moments and jokes that only you two would know about. Put it on a poster board and add some clipart and some pictures to it!
The crossword puzzle could be time consuming and a bit frustrating ... you could do the same idea with a WORDSEARCH or WORDFIND puzzle.
Put your computer skills to work! Use Excel, get clipart from Yahoo Images Search, copy them, and reformat them, use a gluestick to put on posterboard.
Use graph paper, and pictures from magazines if you are not as good on the computer, and it will give it a homemade feeling.

I would suggest you avoid sentimental gifts, if you love the guy, just tell him, that will be enough. The best gift to get a guy is something he would really like. For example, if he likes football, maybe you could get him his team's shirt, or even a ticket to their next match. If you really love him and are prepared to give up 90 minutes of your life for him, why not get two tickets and go with him.
The important thing to remember is when you give him your gift tell him you wanted to get him something he would really appreciate, because he should already know you love him.

This is a really hard question to answer as no one here has met your boyfriend. What is good for one person is terrible for another. The one item that means the most to me is my teddy bear which I have had for 25 years....For your boyfriend it would probably be the most meaningless gift ever. You really need to think of something that he can take with him where ever he goes to remind him of you. I would go with a really nice strong watch if he is in the army with as many army related functions as possible (compass, world time, water resistant to 500m etc) and hope that he likes it. As I said though, only you know what he likes and will use.

The long thingy above is a watch that I think would make a nice gift.

A heartfelt letter where you pour your heart out to him about how you feel about him and why you love him, tell him your every thought. Expression of feeling is the most meaningful gift. A man wrote me a letter like that over 2 years ago, and his words are etched on my brain, in my heart... If my house caught fire, that letter is what I would grab!

I don't think any present can do that, it's more about things you do that what you buy. Buy him something nice by all means, but it would be nice to arrange a special evening, cook him a meal or take him out somewhere nice, whatever he likes.

How about a nice photo frame with a picture of you together? He can look at it while you're apart.

something personal, that you did with your hands, not bought. Or take him to a place where he always wanted to go, even if you hate it. Something that is meaningfull, not materialistic.
