A series wound motor (typically AC/DC with brushes) is used for high torque, high power applications. An electric drill or a vacuum cleaner motor would most likely be series wound.

series motor are of two types:


1. AC series motor (these are the commutator machines).

2. DC series motor (these are the commutator machines).


generally series motors are used in traction for they produce excellent starting and running torque.


DC series motors are used in Traction, lifts, crane and hoists, mills etc)

AC series motor are used for traction purposes, blower systems, drought systems.)

the series system is beneficial as the speed control is better..


the main problem with series motor is that they should not be used at zero load..

where we need high starting torque, we use dc series motor
