My boyfriend takes several different meds for bipolar/manic depressive (Trazedone, serequel, buspar, etc) and has been very stressed out lately, but recently no matter what I did, he could not get aroused. He's on and off his meds all the time.... is it the meds, him not taking them regularly, or is it me???

Without meds there shouldn't be a problem with sexual activity. If you are in a deppressive state though, it is natural that you don't have the urge to do much of anything, let alone sex. Most medications can cause side affects, but it generally depends on the person and the meds prescribed. Some Psychiatrists won't prescrive Anti-deppressants at all (one of the major libido killing culprits) and some with prescribe them with a mood stabilizer, such as Lamictal. One of the better anti-depressants out there is Wellbutrin. To my knowledge it has the least likely chance of affecting the mood.

Many antidepressants/anti-anxiety medications can result in a diminished libido for a lot of people. I know that it is common with Zoloft and Paxil. Some meds, like Wellbutrin are supposed to have less effect on your libido.

Take a look at what else is going on when you are not getting aroused. If you have had a really stressful day/week, that may be contributing to it. If you are depressed it may be a lack of confidence or poor self-concept. There is also the possibility that someone who had an unhealthy sex life before the medication no longer has the chemical imbalance that led to those poor choices. I don't think that the last one is very common, but I know it was the case with someone I used to know.

Talk to your doctor about it. She/he can determine the cause of it. It could also be sexual dysfunction (it happens to men AND women and there are treatments for both).

Different medications act differently on all people. One of the best anti-depressant medications for not affecting sexuality is Wellbutrin. The Bipolar medication that is usually prescribed with it is Lamictal.

WITHOUT meds you may have a higher than normal interest in sex during your manic episodes.

If you're ON meds, Lithium may make you not want to do anything.

A severe depression will effect libido and a highly manic state will effect libido but not always in the opposite direction. I still like the term manic-depressive.
