Wow, there are so many places to see. From the Bund and its foreign-influenced buildings of the late 19th and early 20th centuries to the entire former French quarter to the Jade Buddha Temple to the Xujiehui Cathedral to ....

Unfortunately, Shanghai has lost a lot of its history to the wrecking ball as it rapidly develops.

Remember, however, that Shanghai - unlike Beijing and Xi'An - is not an ancient city. It is only about 250 years old.

I would suggest you start at the Bund where you can view the past on the PuXi side to the newest on the PuDong side (where the world's tallest building is under construction), then go to the older areas southwest of the Bund, then to Xujiehui where you can see the old French Cathedral as well as the new modern buildings and electronics sales areas, then to the Shanghai Museum in People's Square (this building, shaped like a cooking pot, can take days to see all the exhibits), then on to whatever you like.

You'll love Shanghai. I've lived here for three years now and don't want to ever leave!

I lived in Shanghai for 1 year + and I can honestly tell you that there are not many "traditional" places for you to see. All of those places untouched after years of revolution (if there are really any left in China) have already been described above. Regardless, Shanghai is a truly unique city among all other Chinese cities. Beijing, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong truly have their charms, but after living in Shanghai for awhile I am clearly biased :) Try hanging out in the off-beat areas... near Fudan campus etc. and you will find that Shanghai has a unique culture all its own.... Granted some people might call it a melange of cultures from East Asia to America, but I wish I could still call it home :( God I miss Shanghai!!!!
