Some of these people think you just posed that question all on your own. Or that you are only pondering some late, great philosophical thinker. They have no idea that you quoted Scripture, The Word of God Himself.

Amen! ---And people can "thumbs down" The Word of God all they want. Truth is still Truth whether someone believes it to be so or not.

It benefits a man - nothing, if he gains the whole world and lose his own soul!

The Christian life is not only a wonderful life, but one who is saved is saved eternally! What good news!

So what is the soul is mentioned in the Bhagavad-gita, which is the preliminary study of soul and relationship of soul with supersoul, God, material nature.

Bhagavad-gita-2.12 & 13
Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor all these kings; nor in the future shall any of us cease to be. As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A sober person is not bewildered by such a change.

Those who are seers of the truth have concluded that of the nonexistent [the material body] there is no endurance and of the eternal [the soul] there is no change. This they have concluded by studying the nature of both. That which pervades the entire body you should know to be indestructible. No one is able to destroy that imperishable soul. Bhagavad-gita-2.16 & 17

More about soul in verses 22 to 25,
As a person puts on new garments, giving up old ones, the soul similarly accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones. The soul can never be cut to pieces by any weapon, nor burned by fire, nor moistened by water, nor withered by the wind. This individual soul is unbreakable and insoluble, and can be neither burned nor dried. He is everlasting, present everywhere, unchangeable, immovable and eternally the same. It is said that the soul is invisible, inconceivable and immutable. Knowing this, you should not grieve for the body.

Pascal's wager:

"If god exists, it's infinitely better to believe, since you get heaven instead of hell for eternity. If he doesn't, it doesn't matter since you're dead anyway. So overall it's better to believe"

This is, of course, false.

Some of the problems with the argument:

* The implied assumption that god may exist (with a 50% probability, no less!)

* The assumption that there is an afterlife with a heaven and hell

* The assumption that the god cares about belief in him/her above all else

* The assumption that if you believe in a god, it will definitely be the same god that actually exists.

* The assumption that you lose nothing if it's false. You have lost a great deal, from time praying to a nonexistent entity (somebody mentioned just today praying several hours a day!!!) to morality (your god may ask you to hurt other people) and much more besides.

* The assumption that people can believe in something simply because it benefits them. Would you believe goblins exist for twenty bucks? Why not?

* The assumption that any god won't see through the "believing just to get into heaven" ploy.

Hmmm, again I must say that I am disinclined to acquiesce to your request. Why, because the belief system that you are referring to is based on a book that I find deplorable and holds to a vision of God that I cannot tolerate. If by some 'miracle' you are right, I will still be glad of my choices as I followed my heart and my conscience. Your beliefs go against my personal code of ethics, morality, compassion and empathy. Thank you just the same though.

You can not choose to believe in something that you see hordes of evidence against. It would be like asking you to believe that cows could fly, when you know better. Even if you knew salvation depended on it, you couldn't get yourself to believe in something like that. It's not your choice. Belief is not a virtue.

I believe in Hinduism. I could ask you, why don't you believe in Hinduism? But I don't require you to believe as I do. I respect your beliefs. I believe that God saves all who come to Him, in whatever form.

If you say the words so that you will be saved, you are not sincere. You may be able to believe things out of convenience, but God won't be fooled by it.
