If you are using an iron, spray a section of the hair you will straighten with a hair protector, specifically made for hair straighteners. Contact any beauty supply store and ask about their best products.
If you are referring to a chemical straightening product, go to a professional that you trust. Never do this on your own. There are too may products that will literally destroy your hair.

wash your hair and make sure it is dry. My hair straightener came with some stuff called Chi. You just put a drop on your hand and rub your hands together and then rub in your hair. It feels greasy but it's not. Use the straightener on one section at a time. Your hair will be silky smooth.

use a heat activating shampoo and conditioner before touching that straightener. afterwards blow dry your hair then use the straightner as usual. heat activated products release moisture to the hair once heat is introduced to the hair so hair would be protected and moisturized.

buy a chi iron and you won't need to do anything-it costs a pretty penny, but well worth it
