Mormons made it up. Masons were really started back with the building of Solomon's temple. The stone masons (contacted by Solomon and not Jewish) formed a club for masons. It later was opened to non-mason workers and has always remained very secretive and accused of a very elaborate world-wide conspiracy to be working toward a new world order or single world government.
The conspiracy theory goes way way way deeper than you could ever imagine. Supposedly there are very few people that are influencial in government that are not influenced in some way by Masons. All but 2 of our nation's presidents were Masons or associated with Masons. The pyramid on the back of a one dollar bill is a masionic symbol. It is pretty out there. I read about it and it freaked me out. If it is true, they literally control the world behind the scenes.

Which of the many masonic orders are you talking about? If you mean the one founded by Anderson and his fellows, it was 1717, but there were masonic lodges in all of Europe during the middle ages, in the form of builder's guilds. Before that, the famed Collegia Romanorum held the place of sacred constructors (builders of sacred places, such as temples), and there are accounts of such guilds in old Judea (now Israel) in biblical times. Before that, the masons were known to have built the pyramids and temples of Egypt, and who knows what else before that? The freemasons of the present days are a filosophical organization that deals a lot on moral and philantropy, but it still keeps the old allegories and symbolism of the sacred builders of old. Masonic and non-masonic authors have all been unable to establish the origins of freemasonry, for the masons themselves were forbidden to write down any documents of their history, leaving not much proof of their existence before the Andersonian times.

According to my research....look up Oct. 13, 1307. It wasn't Jewish Levites, it was part Babylonian and part Egyptian. The end of the Knights Templar moving into the craft guilds of Europe. Many of the names of officers and the orginization itself are French words. Like "dugard" which means "sgt at arms"....."tyler" which is the word for the person that accepts the password at the door to the lodge. "Freemason" look up the French origin.
Hope this helps...
