Though it is not the reason that Catholics eat fish on Fridays, yes, helping a fisherman is an important part of salvation. It is a part of God's command to "love your neighbor as yourself."

The tradition (yes, a man made tradition) of eating fish on Friday came about as a means of uniting ourselves with the plight of the poor. The rich can go to market and buy beef, chicken, pork, etc. The poor who could not afford these things had to go to the river of lake and catch their meal. By eating fish, we place ourselves in the place of the poor.

Unfortunately, eating fish is no longer considered placing ourselves in the place of the poor, so I eat things like penut butter and jelly, bean soup, or macaroni and cheese instead.

The tradition of giving up something for Lent is a practice of self sacrifice that reminds up of the good things that God has given us. When you voluntarily give up something for Lent, you miss that thing. This should make you more aware of the good things that God has given to us, including chocolate.

Yes, I think God does care if we appreciate the gifts He has given to us.

It is not what we do that is important, it is what is in our hearts, but what we do and what we feel in our hearts are interrelated.

I gave up alcohol for lent but because from sundown saturday to sundown sunday it is a feast day supposedly we are allowed to break lent. This has had a bad effect though because my friends will try to get me to drink a lot on Saturday night and because I haven't drank all week I will enjoy beer maybe a little too much. Kind of defeats the purpose.

Smells like homework or school work. - don't do people's homework for them. I will say this though... The Pope called each council together (Trent was convened in response to the Reformation) Showing that the church is 1 and apostolic. You can work out the others if you think about what happened during that time and what came out of each of those councils.. in a general sense.

where does the bible tell us that we can only eat fish ? pagan ideals and practices. following what a man (currently an ex nazi soldier) tells you will lead you to damnation. the fish 'thing' was started in the 70's, to help a dying fishing industry in the world market. will helping a fisherman save you ? will giving up chocolate for a week ? will God really care ? study the bible, not what an inferior excuse for a man tells you.
