Here in UK a Ford Mondeo with Zetec engine in the 2.0 litre class. The car will be about 5 years plus old but still reliable. Before purchase, get your motoring org AA or RAC etc to check it out for you - esp. if buying from private owner. It must have a full year's MoT and road fund license fee paid up for not less than 10 - 12 months.
A 2.0 litre Ford Mondeo with Zetec engine will easily do 130+ even at 5+ years if well maintained. Make sure the engine is 'clean', if it looks greasy and oily it may be an oil burner which has been 'blown' - needs new gaskets etc.
Ford spares are dirt cheap. I used to work for a dealership selling spares and must advice you that the fittings for most vehicles are the same brand. That is the headlights for a Jag are the same as for a Ford etc. However, if you own a Jag you pay more. The Ford owner is classified as 'economy' thus prices are kept low.

Maybe a shopping trolley GTi! Any kind of performance car for that kind of money is gonna be a pup thet has already been thrashed to within an inch of its life and mileage wise will have been to the moon and back. You will spend more time with your head under the bonnet than you will driving the thing. Best off getting a a good example of something like a Peugeot 106, Ford Fiesta or Vauxhall Corsa. Something that will get you around in no great hurry but will be kind to you by not insisting on seeing a mechanic every two minutes. A hot hatch for two grand will cost you far more in the long run believe me

Perhaps a 1995 bmw 540i.
I got for mine 1200 quid from ebay, no faults, 94,000 miles and 286bhp....
you can get V8 jags for that money too...
maybe into '86 TVR 350i for about 2.5k
a whole lot of rice burners such as supras, 300zx's etc etc
and of course all the hot hatches from yesteryear golf gti's, 205 gti's 1.9, clio williams....
if its reliability you after you take your chances! ps - unsure a mondeo can ever be called 'fast' - maybe fast compared to a fiesta...

My 2.0VW passat blows the heck out of a ford mondeo anytime on any road in terms of acceleration and top speed, even my older 1.9TDI with 170Bhp passat blows the heck out of a 2.0Litre ford mondeo with a zetec engine. Of course the vw passat isn't cheap nowadays... too bad but great cars

Fastest as in top speed or fastest acceleration? And why? For racing professionally or for hanging around with your mates outside the local chip-shop? (j/k).
Add some details and let us know.

going fast in a car that has sunk to that value is not very sensible.
