"Mosaic" refers to a two-dimensional decoration made up of minute tiles applied to a flat surface such as a wall or floor to form a picture or decorative border. The tiles might be ceramic or stone. Mosaic is an ancient form of decoration dating back to the Roman empire (the ruins of Pompeii feature a number of decorative mosaics). The advantage is that it is essentially permanent and as strong as the structure it is attached to. The disadvantage is that it is permanent and as strong as the structure it is attached to.....and very labor intensive and, therefore, very expensive to execute.

A mosaic is basically a picture contrived of small pieces somewhat like a puzzle but nothing has to fit perfectly together. Usually the pieces are offset to expose the gaps.
