Desserts are decorated for visual appeal & portioned for convenience both of the host & guests, portions are usually quite sufficient for the average eater.

Portioned desserts are so much more easier to eat. Compared to an entree, an entree is meant to keep the stomach full. But desserts are meant to complete a meal. And you don't need a whole lot to satisfy your cravings because after the entree, you are probably almost full (unless you are a big eater of course).
